Bismi Allahi arrahmani arraheem

The University of Toronto is where I cut my academic teeth. I spent so much time at Robarts Library, the librarians thought I lived there. I came to classes early, I stayed late. I showed up to office hours, I completed the extra readings, I emailed. I went to the writing centre, met with learning strategists, and attended extra lectures. I learned literary terms and improved my lexical diversity which allowed me to further complicate my ideas.

Through repetition, I honed my close reading skills under the tutelage of some serious scholars doing some serious scholarship. I learned about theory and rhetoric. I learned how to conduct didactic seminars that are expository. I learned how to posit arguments buttressed by textual evidence and buoyed by scholarship while maintaining an academic register.

I grinded habibi and that hard work landed me with an Honours Bachelor’s: English Specialist with a Minor in Fine Art History. With distinction. Alhamdulillah.

I am blessed to have an excellent support team. Thanks to my mom, Dr Theodore. Thanks to my siblings: Sen, Moni, Bubz. Thanks to my cat Afrikaaa Shabazz. Thx to my family doc, Dr Weir, my therapist Sidonia. My registrar Natasha—a beast. All my peers who made me better. Thanks to my referees: Dr. Mace, Dr Sobecki, Dr Hansen. Thx to Chops, El Jefe, MacZu. RIP. Thx to everyone who donated to my GoFundMe after the fire at my place. Thx to my bosses—especially Noni—and my coworkers.

Thx to all the people who reached out to me after my sister passed.

Hay muertos que van hacia los puertos
buscando el frío, buscando el día que se rompe,
pero la muerte está en el mundo como un río,
como un viento que pasa arrastrando los días.

No es la muerte que llega con la guadaña,
