BAPRAS is inviting applications for SIAG Trainee Representative roles across a range of plastic surgery subspecialties.

We are looking for ST5–8 trainee members to support the organisation and promotion of educational events, contribute to e-LPRAS content, and help strengthen trainee engagement within the Special Interest Advisory Groups.

Opportunities are available in:

BAPRAS is pleased to announce a hands-on cadaveric course in lower-limb flap reconstruction, taking place on 1 December 2026 ahead of BAPRAS Congress 2026.

Designed to upskill the civilian plastic surgery workforce, the course offers an opportunity to develop practical techniques for managing complex lower-limb trauma, with particular consideration of mechanisms of injury relevant to conflict.

The programme covers:
Emergency vascular access and shunts
Soft tissue coverage across all areas of the lower limb
Functional lower-limb amputations

Early bird registration for AEC 6.1 – Lower limb reconstruction closes on 27 August.⁠

The course runs over two days in Leeds this October, covering lower limb reconstruction from acute trauma through to complex soft tissue and bone work. Lectures and breakout sessions are paired with faculty-led case panels at the end of each day, so delegates can work through real decision-making with surgeons from the UK and beyond.⁠

Introducing our fourth speaker for the BAPRAS x PLASTA UK x PRASSA UK National Webinar Series (Upper Limb Surgery): Mr Norbert Kang

Bio:
Mr Norbert Kang is a consultant plastic and reconstructive surgeon based at the Royal Free Hospital in London. He graduated from Imperial College Medical school in 1989 and has been based at the Royal Free since 2006. He has specialist interests in surgery for the upper limb and prosthetic reconstruction after amputation in particular. In 2018, he co-founded the Relimb Service together with his colleague Mr Alexander Woollard. Relimb was setup to create a “one-stop-shop” for patients needing complex surgical reconstruction after trauma, cancer or other acquired conditions. Relimb specialises in the use of osseointegrated implants and targeted muscle reinnervation but also provides the entire spectrum of reconstructive options for these patients. In his spare time, he enjoys hill walking, gardening and DIY.

Throwback to the Global Plastic Surgery Congress in Buenos Aires, Argentina! 🇦🇷

PLASTA committee members Aaliya Uddin and Richard Clough, with BAPRAS President Paul McArthur represented the UK at the Global Plastic Surgery Congress in Buenos Aires.

The PLASTA team met with residents and programme directors from 10 different countries to discuss mutual international fellowship opportunities and to learn about differences in training programmes. PLASTA also triumphed in 2/2 matches played in the Global Residents Forum!🏆

A brilliant few days of international collaboration, learning, and connection within global plastic surgery 🌍

To mark BAPRAS at 80, we're looking back at the man who started it all.
Sir Harold Gillies transformed medicine during the First World War, pioneering and refining the tube pedicle flap, treating over 5,000 soldiers at Sidcup, and training a generation of surgeons who shaped the specialty. Among the first to understand the importance of patient psychology and holistic, multidisciplinary care, his instruments and principles remain in use today.

Outside the operating theatre, he was a talented sportsman and artist with a wicked sense of humour, and a surgeon willing to go where others would not.

In 1947, he became the first President of what would become BAPRAS.
