@baraaalem likes his Zenith Chronomaster Solo Sport watch the way he likes his films. He is absolutely A fan of vintage and analogue things. “classical, not flashy” is more his style as he told GQ Middle East.

“What’s killing us is trying to be Hollywood,” @baraaalem tells GQ Middle East. “We should write about ourselves and be as specific as we can, and they will travel the world… People don’t want wannabes.”

For Baraa, those specifics matter. An accent that doesn’t belong, a shemagh worn the wrong way, even the way someone expresses affection can be enough to break the illusion. It’s why he believes Saudi cinema needs to trust its own language, culture and way of telling stories rather than looking elsewhere for the blueprint.

Before @baraaalem was making films, he was reviewing them. Filmmer, the YouTube channel he started with two friends, grew to more than half a million subscribers and eventually became an unlikely route into acting.

“That is the reason why I did everything after that,” he tells GQ Middle East. “It’s the reason why I’m speaking to you right now.”

Now, with a Ramadan hit behind him and his first film as a director, Baraa finds himself on both sides of the camera, and with a lot more say in what happens there.

From the closing ceremony of the 12th #saudi_film_festival

A festival I first walked into years ago as an awestruck teenager, driven by nothing but a passion for cinema.

It was here that my films were screened as an actor.
Here, I had the honor of hosting both the opening and closing ceremonies in one of its editions.
I attended its workshops, moderated its panels, was a Jury member once and, most recently, presented my very first short film project as a director. It believed in that project, supported it, and, God willing, next year we’ll all watch “Dharf” on its big screen.

My sincere thanks to everyone who has contributed to sustaining this remarkable institution. May it always remain the roof beneath which our dreams grow and our ambitions become reality.

May this blessing endure.
