Ok ok ok, lets talk about MOQs a little more deep than my previous post!

When you're developing your first collection, it is easy to treat a manufacturer's MOQ as a number you simply have to accept. But MOQ is much more than a production requirement.
For an emerging brand, the quantity you commit to can affect cash flow, inventory, pricing, storage, product assortment and overall financial risk.
Producing 500 units might give you a better cost per unit, but what happens if you can only realistically sell 150? Now you have cash tied up in inventory, storage costs, and potentially months of product sitting before it sells.
And this is especially important when you're deciding how to balance wholesale, e-commerce, multiple styles, colors and sizes.
That is why I don't think the conversation should stop at:
“What is your MOQ?”
It should also be:
“What is driving your MOQ, and what options do I have?”
Depending on the manufacturer and production setup, there may be ways to negotiate a smaller initial run, adjust the production structure, or plan for a reorder instead of committing to a large quantity from the beginning.
MOQ should be part of your business and production strategy, not simply a number you accept.
That is why my latest Inside the Fashion Industry article breaks down how MOQ can impact your business and what you should consider before placing that production order.

MOQ is often treated as a production detail, but it is really a business decision. A higher minimum can mean a lower cost per unit, but it can also mean more cash tied up in inventory, higher storage costs, slower cash flow, and potentially heavy discounting if the product doesn’t sell as expected.

Before agreeing to an MOQ, you need to look at the bigger picture: expected demand, your sales model, available cash, margins, lead times, storage, and your potential for reorders.

Because sometimes the cheapest unit cost isn’t the cheapest business decision.

Production planning should happen before you place the order, not after.

Need help planning your first production run? That’s one of the areas I work on with emerging designers.

One of the biggest mistakes emerging designers make is budgeting for the finished garment without budgeting for everything that happens before production.

A product doesn't go directly from a sketch to a factory. There is an entire development chain behind it:

Concept → Sketch → Tech Pack → Sourcing → Pattern → Sample → Fitting → Revisions → Grading → Size Set → Production

And every step can add time and cost.

A beautiful sketch is not a production-ready product. A first sample is not necessarily a final sample. And a production quote does not automatically mean your product has been fully developed.

This is where many emerging designers underestimate their budgets.

Tech packs, patternmaking, material sourcing, fittings, sample revisions, grading, and size sets all need to be considered before you commit to production.

The goal isn't to spend the most money developing your product. It's to understand what your product actually needs to become production-ready, consistent, and financially viable.

I break down the full fashion product development process, including where designers most commonly underestimate costs, in my latest blog.

Consumers aren't necessarily looking for cheaper fashion.

They're looking for reasons to pay more!

In a market where shoppers are becoming increasingly value-conscious, emerging designers often make the mistake of thinking they need to compete on price.

I don't think that's where the opportunity is!

If you're building a fashion brand, your competitive advantage may be creating a product that feels worth paying more for.

That can come from:
• Quality
• Craftsmanship
• Materials
• Fit
• Construction
• Story
• Exclusivity
• Service
• Longevity

The goal isn't simply to make a more expensive product. It's to create a product that gives the customer a reason to choose you instead of something they can find everywhere else.

And this starts long before the product reaches the customer...

It starts with product development!

What are you making?
Who is it for?
What materials are you using?
What price point makes sense?
How will it be produced?
What makes it different?
And most importantly, why should someone pay more for it?

As an emerging designer, you don't necessarily need to beat fast fashion at its own game. You need to build something fast fashion can't easily replicate.

Brand positioning and product development have to work together.

If you're ready to turn your creative vision into a stronger, more commercially viable fashion brand, this is exactly what I help emerging designers build.

AI IN FASHION PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT: WHAT SHOULD DESIGNERS ACTUALLY BE USING IT FOR?

AI in fashion is often discussed as if the only two possibilities are “AI will change everything” or “AI will replace designers.”
But there is a much more practical conversation to have.
AI can already support fashion businesses with market research, competitor research, trend analysis, product ideation, fabric research, supplier research, cost analysis, demand forecasting, inventory planning and customer research.
And honestly, some of these applications are much more interesting than simply generating an image of a dress.
The real opportunity is using AI to process information faster, identify patterns, test scenarios and reduce repetitive work, while allowing designers and product-development professionals to focus on what still requires human expertise.
Because AI can suggest a fabric, but it cannot physically evaluate its hand feel.
It can identify a supplier, but it cannot build the relationship for you.
It can generate a product concept, but it cannot determine whether that product will actually fit, be manufactured efficiently, meet your quality standards or make commercial sense.
AI should make the product-development process stronger, not replace the expertise behind it!

I break down where AI can actually add value to fashion product development, and where designers should continue relying on human judgment and technical expertise, in my latest blog.
