I created this series of four translucent 27 x 57 inch linoleum relief print hangings specifically for the front windows of the gallery. Entitled White Ash Prayer I-IV, they move gently in the breeze like prayer flags and tell the story of the loss of a massive white ash tree as a result of Emerald Ash Borer damage. The ash tree from which the beetle-channeled pattern was taken speaks for millions of white and green and black ash trees lost since the introduction of the borer to the US through wood pallet and container shipments from Asia. Ash is an important player in forest regeneration because it seeds into open area through winged, wind dispersed seeds, and it has a deep cultural connection to the Abenaki and other native peoples in their tradition of split ash basketry and their creation stories, as well as being and important wood economically. This particular very large white ash tree graced the entrance to the historic Depuy Canal House in High Falls, NY. On exhibit at Art Society of Kingston through April 27.
