I’m hiking in a deep lush forest in the Smoky Mountains next to the beautiful Middle Prong River and it’s a real shame that this is occupying my mind:

I love being in the woods alone and I love hiking trails that are sparsely populated with other people. But when I do see people, I like to say hello, good morning, how ya doin’? With the very strong exception of a Lone. White. Male.

Every person who has ever touched me inappropriately without permission, physically or sexually assaulted me, hurt me, stalked me, broken into my home, broken into my home and been in my bed, punched my windshield and walls, invaded my space, pulled IT out, already had it out, turned nasty at a rejection, grabbed my breast, groped my ass, left scars physically and emotionally, or was just generally fucking weird in a threatening way has been a lone white male.

And none of these has happened only once. I never intended to collect this data, but there it is. It collected itself. Maybe this isn’t you. I won’t know until it’s happening.

It’s friends, family members, authorities, dates, strangers. And I couldn’t possibly have been “asking for it” every time 😡. Every woman that you know has a story like this (probably multiple stories). It is less common not to.

For the record, I have traveled solo through the cities and forests and countrysides of the world, but most of these things have happened in “safe” places. Home. Near home. A trusted home.

None of this has happened to me on the trails. Keep up the good work.

I selfishly needed to purge this, and maybe somebody needs to see it. And I’m not gonna think about it anymore on my hikes. Until I have to. by @barbaracnesbitt

A light went out yesterday. Levi is gone.
Our friendship has been deep and abiding, no matter the time or distance. He left his mark on my heart and on so many others.
