NEW WORK 🗣️‼️ Barbra Hobot's recent textile series builds upon the theme of alchemy explored in her previous exhibition, while incorporating her iconic net drawings.

Sourcing materials native to the Waterloo region, Hobot uses the transformative processes of batik drawing and eco-dyeing fabric to create textiles that feel like imprints from the natural world. Maple leaves, onion skins, and raspberry leaves stain a distinctive ground, while her net drawings emerge as the wax is melted away. Returning to her roots in drawing, she then reactivates each surface with layers of intricate lines.

🔶 Closure Notice: OKG will be closed this Saturday August 1st, in advance of the civic holiday 🔶

One of the drawings marking the end of a year of studio and field-based research with @rare_sites and @musagetesf through their Question Mark fellowship. It was an opportunity to explore rare’s 1500 acres of nature reserve held in public trust, including meadows, cliffs, riversides and old growth forest. The time I spent there resulted in reptilian imagery and moire patterns in my studio experiments. Vertical lines made their way into my compositions, mimicking the disorienting patterns I observed when walking through tall grasses. The snake iconography has a few associations that relate to my larger practice: transmutation; evasiveness; ouroborus and its similarity to the neverending, expansive links of a net. Thank you to the generous teams at @rare_sites, @musagetesf, and @lisa.hirmer for her mentorship. #questionmarkfellowship #snakesofontario #transferpaperprint by @barbarahobot
