Barbara Lüdde
Betwixt and Between
14. Juni 2026 – 05. Juli 2026

In the twilight of transitions, hypermodern Zeitgeister and hybrid creatures (Lüdde) encounter fairy-tale and fable beings (Klassen). Identities are hinted at, emerging against monochrome backdrops (Lüdde), or dissolve into fantastic, dusky scenarios (Klassen). Pop-cultural codes and art-historical references intersect with symbols drawn from mythology and folklore - from Siberia to Hollywood.

Societal structures as well as inner and outer states are explored, power relations negotiated, and the complexity of contemporary realities revealed. Lüdde’s fine, precise lines and Klassen’s sweeping forms enter into their own rhythm, united by a shared love of detail, symbols, and fluid beings.
𝟝𝟘 𝕊𝕙𝕒𝕕𝕖𝕤 𝕠𝕗 𝔾𝕣𝕒𝕪 explores the gray in-between of contemporary realities – shaped by synchronicity, pop culture and mythology, dream and reality, figure and abstraction. The allure of gray lies in its suspension: it enables ambiguity and brings nuances to light – a poetic encounter in the twilight of gray tones.

BARBARA LÜDDE @barbaraluedde
Uh-Oh, 2021

Barbara Lüdde lebt in Hamburg. Ihre Arbeiten wurden u. a. im Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg, in der Villa Stuck München und bei Arsenal Contemporary Art New York gezeigt.

BARBARA LÜDDE @barbaraluedde
Uh-Oh, 2021
Ink on paper, 67.5 × 52 cm
(Installation with photo wallpaper, readymade)

In “Uh-Oh,” figuration becomes trace. The figure remains elusive – without a face, without narrative specificity. Clothing carries the expression: as surface, as code, as displaced embodiment.
The drawing, framed between glass, floats delicately in space. It is accompanied by a fragmentary wallpaper: suggesting an outside world that dissolves into visual remnants.
Lüdde understands visibility not as a given state, but as a relation – between intimacy and simulation, presence and surface, identity and absence.

Lüdde lives in Hamburg. Her work has been shown at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg, Villa Stuck Munich, and Arsenal Contemporary Art New York.

Grey as a non-colour, as a contourless in-between, as everything and nothing, holds a special position among colours. The “soul of all colours,” as painter Odilon Redon once called grey, appears in nuances: sometimes soft and shapeless, sometimes warm or cold, at times impenetrable, unclear, or in the sharpest precision – yet always indeterminate. This grey in-between resists any polarization and creates space for concentration, reflection, and meditation. The ambivalence of vagueness oscillates between monochrome clarity and blurred ambiguity.

The exhibition 𝟝𝟘 𝕊𝕙𝕒𝕕𝕖𝕤 𝕠𝕗 𝔾𝕣𝕒𝕪 presents the latest ink drawings by Barbara Lüdde and Andrey Klassen in a dialogical interplay that explores the intermediate worlds of this non-colour. Using black drawing and technical ink on white ground, the medium- and large-format works create a new grey zone between night and day, reality, imagination, and dream.

The group exhibition „Worin unsere Stärke besteht – to be continued“ links to current national and international discourses on the GDR.

Andrea Pichl brings together eleven contemporary positions by women artists from different generations, all born in the GDR before the fall of the Berlin Wall, with works from the Beeskow Collection of art from the GDR. The works are characterized by a plurality of themes, media, approaches, and experiences.

Rather than focusing on a single narrative of the GDR or a historicization of its art, the exhibition highlights the significance of biographies. How do biographies shape approaches to certain subjects, and which themes recur across different generations?
