In a series of short conversations I ask an artist two questions about their work and process.

BARBARA SMITH GIOIA

MH: You describe your process as one of call and response, where the painting’s history is essential to its outcome. The cadence, underlying grid, and gradations of color seem to drive your formal decisions as much as any external influences. Are you attempting to create a space of equilibrium within the canvas – and by extension, yourself – or do you let the canvas dictate its harmony or dissonance without outside interference?

BSG: Equilibrium is a relative term, so the compositions begin with imbalance as a point of reference. Call and response creates the conditions for spontaneity, possibility and discovery. I think of painting as the process of becoming. When change occurs within the work, it’s part of the process of discovery, creating a history not always visible through ghost lines or underpainting, but still integral to transformation and growth. Outside influences such as music and nature can influence my focus, mood, and color choices, as much as the call and response taking place within the work does. In the end, it’s a balancing act seeking resolution between opposing forces — stability vs. instability and finding the sweet spot that joins them.

MH: “Sweet spot” implies balance, and could refer to the reconciliation of one’s internal biases with external forces that are at odds with the artist’s creative ambitions. Do you approach these ongoing concessions with dignity and grace, or is it more of a hand-to-hand combat situation? And how does it affect your life outside the studio?

BSG: So, yes, ultimately I am striving for equilibrium. I use the grid to create a composition formed by shapes and color moving in irregular beats across the picture plane. There can be a feeling of imbalance created through changes in scale and color value, but also a sense of joy. The process of balancing and counterbalancing the forms in order to achieve harmony is my intended goal. Why? The world is filled with turmoil. My studio is a place where I find refuge from the drumbeat of discord.

Newburgh Open Studios is proud to present On and off the grid, the works of Barbara Smith Gioia.

Barbara Smith Gioia is an abstract artist working as a painter, printmaker, and collagist. Her work explores color as structure; rhythms and beats; and the tension between stability and instability. Using the grid as an underlying foundation, the works develop through a call and response. The works make visual references to music, textiles, and the presence of the artist’s hand. For Smith Gioia, every painting is its own journey where the process of becoming is the essence of the work.
