It is 1381. England, reeling from the Black Death and years of conflict abroad, prepares for harvest. Two childhood friends ride into the town of Brentwood, Essex, where they come upon an altercation with a local Justice bent on squeezing more coin from the masses. Thus begins a rebellion of the commons - loyal to the king, but not to those landowners who press to curtail their freedoms; the multitude finding common cause against the powers that threaten their livelihoods.

Written in sinuous, exhilarating prose and set over sixteen days, with all the drama and tension of fated history, A.K. Blakemore’s thrilling retelling of the Peasant’s Revolt renders it as a definitive moment in British history. In the meeting of peasantry and nobility, new versions of England were born, and - for one bloody summer - the people of England seized control.

‘And if there were ever a moment to take stock of his England-dreamings, it would be this one, he sup�poses. Mother’s warm bread, perhaps, or shallow brooks of sweet water, and fishing for sticklebacks. His political imagination can carry him only so much further than the real: the long and scorching days of a summer much like this one, and yet, that might be revelled through without fear for the shorter, sunless hours of winter; the earth powder-dry, but couch grass and orange-spotted butterflies pro�liferating; pleasure, freed from all impending. To choose your life, to own your body, to fuck and laugh and smell the flowers, beholden to no one.’

One of my favourite commissions so far. A sgraffito baluster jug inspired by Doom Painting by AK Blakemore @barbiedreamhearse, a thrilling and moving novel following Wat Tyler and fellow rebels through Kent and Essex towards London as they waged the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381. It contains many gorgeous, poetic evocations of the English countryside alongside a galvanising revolutionary spirit and I wanted to capture that in clay. 🗡️ by @barbiedreamhearse
