It’s a beautiful, weird, sacred job being a therapist.

Like any job it has its ups and downs, but all in all, I am so grateful and honored to be entrusted with people’s hearts and stories. I ask God every day to help me be a wise and humble guide for others as I learn and grow alongside them. I think little me would be proud. 💗

Not too long ago, I made a surprising discovery.

I realized there was a real gap between what my heart wanted to do and what I actually had the capacity to follow through on.

In that season, I was being invited to step into something that good intentions alone couldn’t carry. It exposed a mismatch between desire and capacity — and it changed how I understood growth.

So often, when change feels hard, we blame ourselves. But in my own journey and as a therapist, I’ve come to see something different: capacity matters.

Out of that process, I created a free reflective workbook called When Intention Outpaces Capacity — a step-by-step guide to help you bridge the gap between where you are and where you want to be.

Inside the guide, you’ll be invited to:
• clarify your intentions
• assess your current capacity
• identify support
• choose next steps that are honest and kind

At its heart, this resource is an invitation to approach change with both honesty and compassion — honoring your desire to grow and what you truly need to get there.

Comment INTENTION and I’ll send you the free workbook 🤍

Something I think about a lot is how easily our relationship with God can become another place where we feel pressure to perform.

Even the things meant to help us connect with him can start to feel like a measure of how well we’re doing.

It can be hard to recognize how much fear is underneath our devotion when we’ve learned to call it faithfulness.

I want to keep making room for this question: Am I coming to God to be with him, or to make sure I haven’t disappointed him?

I think that distinction matters more than we realize. It shapes whether we feel free to bring him our humanity—the struggles, the emotions, the things we haven’t figured out—or feel like we have to get ourselves together first.

I’ve spent a lot of my life straddling two worlds: the world of faith and the world of psychology.

And one thing I’ve become increasingly convinced of is that these two worlds have far more to offer one another than we sometimes realize.

I also believe we have a responsibility to make sure there’s congruence between the environments we create in the church and the way we talk about emotions.

If we’re inviting people into deeply emotional experiences while simultaneously speaking negatively about emotions, we risk creating unnecessary confusion for the very people we’re trying to care for.

I don’t believe we have to choose between being deeply spiritual and deeply human. In fact, I think part of becoming more like Jesus is learning how to embrace the fullness of our humanity, including our emotions.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this, especially if you’ve spent time in church environments where emotions were sometimes misunderstood or discouraged. 🤍

When we find ourselves in the middle of an unanswered question, it’s easy to start writing a story to explain the uncertainty.

We fill in the gaps, imagine the outcomes, and search for a resolution that might not be ours to find just yet.

In Seasons of Waiting, I explore how the stories we tell ourselves can shape our experience of waiting — and how we might begin to hold those stories with more curiosity and compassion.

What if you didn’t have to resolve every unanswered question today? What if you could make room for the uncertainty without letting it tell the whole story?

🤍 If you’re in a season of waiting, Seasons of Waiting was written with you in mind.

I don’t know who you’re praying for but it matters and it’s making a difference.

There are so many examples in scripture of someone bringing their loved one to Jesus for breakthrough and healing, and it was the faith of their friends and family that made the difference.

God honors the faith we have for each other. Whoever you are believing for - God hears you and he is moving on their behalf because of your faith for them.

Doing the work doesn’t make us less human, it just gives us options we never had before.

There are a lot of misguided ideas about what our lives will look like when we “do the work.” Somehow, we’ve conflated growth with perfection, and that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Doing the work makes us more trustworthy, not perfect.

Doing the work makes us more courageous in the face of our fear.

Doing the work equips us to recognize the impact our words and choices have on others, and gives us the ability to take responsibility when we get it wrong.

Doing the work allows us to show up more authentically and, in doing so, gives others permission to do the same.

We will still get scared. We will still fall into old patterns sometimes. We will still have moments we wish we had handled differently.

But now, we have more awareness. More language. More capacity to pause. More willingness to repair. More choices when we find ourselves in familiar places.

Maybe that’s what growth really is, not becoming a person who never struggles, but becoming a person who knows what to do with themselves when they do.

I don’t know about you but I’ve noticed that sometimes I’ll say, “I’m tired” or “I’m stressed,” because it’s the easiest way to describe how I’m feeling.

But if I actually slow down long enough to get curious, sometimes tired isn’t just tired. Stress isn’t just stress. Frustration might actually be sadness. Anger might be fear. And underneath “I’m fine” might be something I haven’t taken the time to name yet.

Sometimes the first feeling we notice is just the tip of the iceberg. And part of knowing ourselves is learning to pause long enough to ask, What’s actually going on underneath this?

Because naming what we’re really feeling doesn’t make it bigger. It helps us understand ourselves—and often what we need—a little better.
