Bardo Pond outside of the Cooler, a club built in a meat packing district former meat cooler. The area in front of it was a prostitution pick up site. The man on the loading dock was reading Hustler. This was mid to late 90’s. When I moved to New York in 1987, it was clearly less gritty than it was in 1982 and every five years you could see a real big transformation. by @bardo_pond

@bardo_pond has the outward specifications of a rock band but the rivers that converge into the band’s oneiric flow have their headwaters in the outlands of ecstatic jazz, free noise and the avant-garde. Their slow-motion avalanches of churning instrumentation and voice suggest drugged states but don’t necessarily require them. They alter brain chemistry by the alchemical effect of distressed sound alone, aspiring to become engineers of the soul’s passage to alternate states of consciousness.

At the foundation of the pyramid, the drums of Jason Kourkounis and the bass of Clint Takeda lay down a sinewy, sexy and hypnagogic bottom end. At the centre of the pyramid, the twin guitars of John and Michael Gibbons send out emissaries of fire, flaying flesh from bone in a storm of holy liberation. Isobel Sollenberger inhabits the place where the pyramid meets the eye of their storm, weaving fibres of voice, flute and violin through the din.

On the latest episode of the semi-semi-regular Matador Revisionist History Podcast, we are joined by Bardo Pond founder and guitarist Michael Gibbons, Carbon Records founder, longtime WAYO host and Bardo-ologist Joe Tunis, and our podcast host Matt Sweeney (Chavez, The Hard Quartet). The conversation marks the 25th anniversary reissue of ‘Set and Setting,’ plus the double LP rarities compilation ‘Melt Away,’ both out today. Michael, Joe, and Matt dig into the earliest days of Bardo Pond— fighting (and then bonding) over a Lester Bowie LP with bassist Clint Takeda, opening for Smog and Royal Trux at Philadelphia’s Khyber Pass, and eventually even tuning their instruments. link in bio!

Originally released for @recordstoreday in 2016 ‘Acid Guru Pond’ is a fan favourite, an incredible collaboration with Japanese psych-experimentalists, @acidmotherstempleofficial and with kraut legends #GuruGuru. Psychedelic with all the cosmic space-rock noise you’d expect from such an ensemble. Classic rock riffs here are doused in world music influences whilst heavy distortion weaves between Sollenberger’s ethereal vocals and majestic flute. With a meditative quality throughout, the song titles are suitably named after colours.
