The hunt to find viable red oak acorns took us outside Ludlow, the Fisher Center and by Olin Language Center’s >250 year old oak. Our tree identification skills improved slightly as we progressed. The target acorns proved elusive. We hope the few we found will grow to fill in the understory, in support of a healthy forest. @bardarboretum @bardsustainability @forest.defense taken in Richard B. Bartlett Field and the Athletic Center roof are making 7% of main campus’s electricity with solar! Said President Becker before flipping the switch: “We’re not neutral on democracy; we’re also not neutral on sustainability.” This project continues the trend in Red Hook to add solar - the Red Hook Central School District has added solar to all 3 of their roofs, and the Town has 2 Community Solar projects. Together we’re approaching 4 MW of home grown energy.

The Office of Sustainability, the Biology Program, and the Center for Civic Engagement invited budding naturalists on a “Bio blitz” to find and catalog different species living on Bard’s campus. Do you know where the apples at Kline Commons come from? 🍎

Just two miles from campus, Montgomery Place Orchards has been family-owned and operated for nearly four decades. Talea and Doug have tended the orchards since 1987, growing more than 70 varieties of apples.

During peak season, the Bard community enjoy more than 15 bushels - over 400 pounds - of apples each week.

A huge thank you to Talea, Doug, and the entire Montgomery Place Orchards team for helping bring fresh, seasonal apples and produce to Bard each year.
