Ray Johnson

Ray Johnson (1927–1995) frequently incorporated culturally significant figures into his work, notably in his “moticos” collages started in the ‘50s. Johnson drew upon widely recognizable personalities including Shelley Duvall, Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe and notably, Paloma Picasso as a means of engaging shared visual and cultural vocabularies. Johnson incorporated Picasso’s likeness and name across multiple bodies of work, including his mail art practice, the Silhouette Project series (1976–1995), and the Marianne Moore Hats series (1966–1988). Johnson also created a “Paloma Picasso Fan Club”, further exploring the participatory network created by celebritydom, with meetings hosted at Ronald Feldman Gallery’s former space at 33 East 74th Street. In a 1999 review of The Whitney’s “Ray Johnson: Correspondences” show, Nayland Blake writes that Johnson’s Picasso fan club “included nearly everyone in Picasso’s circle but Picasso”. by @bare__elegance

This week we lost pioneering SF comedian and radio host Marilyn Pittman. As one of the first openly gay stand-up comics Pittman used comedy as a form of resilience and resistance during the AIDS crisis.

Patricia “Patty” Hearst, granddaughter of newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst and later John Water muse, was kidnapped from her Berkeley, California, apartment in 1974 at age 19 by the urban guerrilla group Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA). The group initially demanded the release of recently arrested SLA members Joe Remiro and Russ Little.

After the state refused to free the men, the SLA demanded that Hearst’s family distribute $70 worth of food to every needy Californian, an operation that would have cost an estimated $400 million. In response, Hearst’s father arranged the immediate donation of $2 million worth of food to the poor of the Bay Area for one year in a project called People in Need. After the distribution descended into chaos, the SLA refused to release Hearst.

Over the course of her captivity, Patty suffered near constant abuses and indoctrination at the hands of the SLA, with the group forcing Patty to renounce her family and adopt a new name as part of a psychological and political transformation process. Patty took the name ‘Tania’ as tribute to Tamara Bunke, a 1960s communist revolutionary and spy who fought alongside Che Guevara. During her time with the SLA detailed in her 1982 memoir, Every Secret Thing, Patty committed numerous crimes as a member of the organization, most famously the Hibernia bank robbery in San Francisco. Public support for Hearst quickly collapsed after surveillance footage circulated showing Patty seemingly willingly participating in the robbery, outfitted in a trench coat and wielding a semi-automatic rifle, reportedly yelling, “I’m Tania. CROWBAR
339 EAST 10TH STREET

Crowbar opened in 1993 at 339 East 10th Street as the first nightclub operated by Bob Pontarelli and Stephen Heighton, who would later open Barracuda, Elmo, and Industry Bar.

Similar to other DIY, punk, queer clubs in New York City at the time, Crowbar centered performance and underground art, helping launch the careers of several drag performers including Hedda Lettuce and Sherry Vine. In many ways, Crowbar personified the intimate, alternative and splintered condition of New York nightlife in the 90s. Its grungy, dive-y and narrow interior has been compared to pre-AIDS West Side clubs and bars of the 1970s and 80s. The club produced promotional imagery referential of that same period and hosted a nostalgic 1984 party on Friday nights, advertised here.

Describing the space, a 1994 New York Times article noted: “There, in a featureless grim space beneath a dim bulb, men could engage in virtually anonymous sex, former patrons said.” An endorsement from the October 1996 issue of HX magazine reads: “Celebrate depravity with hostess Miss Kitten and DJ Sherry Vine. Loud music, drunken messes, go-go whores and (ooh) a backroom.”

Crowbar closed in 1996.
