Liz and Barefoot Joel find what appears to be a female silver garden orbweaver (Argiope argentata) during the Trail Ranger Interpretive Program (T.R.I.P.) at Peters Canyon Regional Park.

Females are 3 times as large as males.

UV-light reflects off of the top surface of their bodies. This UV-reflectance may serve the same purpose as the UV-silk used to spin their webs: to attract pollinating prey by imitating the characteristics of flowers.

As a spider that is attracted to dry and humid environments, it thrives on the prickly-pear plants of Southern California.

Argiope argentata eats butterflies and moths, both of which require a long bite upon first encounter. This is contrary to other insects that are immediately wrapped in silk. It also preys upon mosquitoes, grasshoppers, and flies.

Like almost all other spiders, Argiope are harmless to humans. They can potentially bite in defense, but pain is comparable to a bee sting.

Instead of purchasing environmentally degrading plastic decorations, consider restoring wildlife habitat with native plants in your home landscape. You'll attract these amazing spiders and many other cool creatures just in time for Halloween!

I miss my good friend and fellow naturalist, Scott Sink, @scott_keltic_knot who passed away yesterday. He was one of the most generous, caring, considerate, supportive, creative, funny and honorable people I knew. I smile when I think back on all the adventures we shared. He inspired and empowered so many us as an amazing educator, historian, activist, farmer, linguist, etymologist, humanitarian, conscious hiphop artist, community organizer, collaborator, defender of the land and loyal friend. He kept the fire burning literally and figuratively. In your honor, I promise to keep the fire burning and never turn on the sprinklers. Scott, thank you for including me in your life. Barefoot Joel finds a California red jumping spider (Phidippus adumbratus), on the gate of @scott_keltic_knot in Trabuco Canyon, CA.

Can you tell if it is a male or a female?

These spiders occur in oak and sycamore woodland, chaparral and coastal sage scrub habitat in Orange County.

Barefoot Joel finds a woodrat in his yard!

Since Joel began restoring his family's yard to wildlife habitat in 2006, a diversity of wildlife, including woodrats, have returned.

Woodrats, deer, quail and other adorable wildlife have disappeared from most of the City of Orange due to habitat loss, which is why urban habitat restoration and the preservation of our remaining undeveloped natural areas is so important.

Woodrats (Neotoma sp.), a.k.a pack rats, make large dens out of twigs and other debris. They collect a variety of objects, including shiny things. Check out our vids of woodrats artistically arranging objects next to Joel's kitchen door on our Naturalist For You YouTube channel.
