These coats for other weathers begin with fabric. Marie Gnanaraj’s lifelong practice with textiles, changes form when Marisa Gnanaraj reimagines them into a coat. These coats exist beyond their function, as individual artistic expressions that have traces in sartorial histories.

The coats presented in the exhibition will be available for purchase on Saturday, 17 October 2026. Prior reservations are accepted.

Charcoal & Rice collection
🌑🍚 limited wonders, available at our flagship store in Colombo.

Inspired by two of the simplest colours around us, the deep darkness of charcoal fires, dhara lipa blacks, fire reds and the soft, warm white of rice.

From these quiet colours comes a special collection of clothes, bags, toys and everyday things, woven, made and designed with the pleasure of colour, the lack of colour, texture and usefulness in mind. taken in BAREFOOT by @barefootceylon

Natural colours to dye for

our vegetable dyeing process produces beautifully unpredictable colour. This is not seen as a flaw but an intrinsic part of our fabric. Every piece, unique and individually handmade.

If you have a natural dye sarong, shawl or an item of clothing, treasure it forever. The dyes are made from plant roots, flowers, leaves and fruits, an organic binding agent fixes the dyes into the cotton yarn from which our hand woven fabrics are created.

Press with the Toes | Reddha Exhibition
by the weavers and designers at Barefoot.

“This piece of cloth, a Reddha, is a woven abstract composition using only geometric colour forms. You can enjoy looking at it indefinitely by noting how colour changes almost totally. They will give you unending pleasure if you notice colour changes in warp and weft, changes in proportions, and the suggested atmosphere: one can see the sea, landscapes, trees, birds, depending on how keen one’s eye and imagination. It needs no frame or glass and folds away neatly when you need a change.”
— Barbara Sansoni

This exhibition takes its name from Barbara Sansoni’s 2004 book of poetry, Press with the Toes in the Grass. Press with the Toes is an ode to the relationship between designer and weaver. The Reddha’s on view are created by the weavers and ten designers of the Barefoot design team, taking forward Barbara Sansoni’s design legacy.

Barbara often spoke about why she called Barefoot “Barefoot.” To be barefoot, she said, is to be in touch with the earth, a grounding effect. Weavers press their toes onto the pedals of the loom, weaving with their whole body.

This exhibition is a celebration of those who carry that legacy forward: a celebration of design, colour, people, and skill. by @barefootceylon

fresh off the loom 🧶
our Natural Dye Shawls are back in store.

Our vegetable dyeing process produces beautifully unpredictable colour. This is not seen as a flaw but an intrinsic part of our fabric. Sustainable, non-toxic and biodegradable, our dyes are made from plant roots, flowers, leaves, fruit and discarded sawdust from wood mills.

An organic binding agent fixes the dyes into the cotton yarn from which our hand woven fabrics are created. Every piece at Barefoot is unique and individually handmade.

🚛🛺 @herwig_photo latest publication @trucks_and_tuks is now available for purchase at the Barefoot Bookshop in Colombo.

‘White stallions and exotic birds frolic around a waterfall, glamorous Bollywood stars sing, a sunset-silhouetted couple bathe in the ocean – such are the images that adorn the trucks and tuks of the Indian subcontinent. These utilitarian vehicles provide a fertile canvas for the vernacular artists whose colour-saturated creativity covers every spare surface.

Over four years, photographer Christopher Herwig (author of the best-selling Soviet Bus Stops series and Soviet Metro Stations) travelled 10,000 kilometres in his quest to record this overlooked artform. He has documented the characteristics of each region – from Pakistan in the north, where intricately painted trucks often have a curved wooden peak at the front, symbolizing a princess’ tiara; to Sri Lanka in the south, where tuk tuks might equally be painted with holy deities or the Joker from Batman.

The designs reflect a driver’s identity, faith and aspirations and span a bewildering range of themes: ideals of masculinity might be intertwined with expressions of love and longing, while bold typography urges drivers to blow their horns or promotes a campaign for the education of girls.

Sadly, as a result of government directives, alongside the proliferation of cheap, mass-produced decorations, this vibrant cultural expression is in decline, making this project all the more vital.’ by @barefootceylon

‘ My interest and curiosity is in colour and colour relationships, but my training was in drawing. One cannot draw on the loom – so, a bird a tree, a complicated view of a river, sky, fields, plants and forest, whatever has colour which interest and excite me, has to be ordered into a geometric form for execution on a simple 2 pedal loom.

The very limitation of this loom has forced me into a deeper and deeper exploration of colour – there are no motifs or decorative forms to distract me. Thus, crossing an orange warp thread with a yellow causes a new gold to be born. The challenge becomes even greater when eight or ten colours are used in a warp, and yet only one colour weft can be used across at one time; this one colour weft affects each of the eight warp colours differently. Composing these compound colour arrangements becomes the challenge of my woven designs. ‘
