“Folk is what comes from the heart.”

The second installment of "Rhythms, Roots, Recipes: Community Stories of Food and Music" brought Armenian American culture centerstage at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History's (@amhistorymuseum) demonstration kitchen.

Boris and Berj Ghazarian, father-and-son chef duo of Bark Barbecue Cafe in Stevensville, Maryland, prepared ghapama, a showstopping stuffed pumpkin, and manti, small meat-filled dumplings served with garlicky yogurt or tomato-sumac sauce.

Acclaimed a cappella trio Zulal shared Armenian folksongs of family, love, food, and community. Journalist Liana Aghajanian led the musical and culinary conversation, highlighting the diversity of the diaspora and the evolution of Armenian heritage across generations and geography.

The "Armenia: Creating Home" program at the #2018Folklife Festival offered a glimpse into Armenian culture, greatly influenced by its surroundings, heritage, and ongoing exchange with its many diasporas.

This Saturday, participants from the Armenia program will return to the stage for the next installment of our "Rhythms, Roots, Recipes: Community Stories of Food and Music" program inside the Wallace H. Coulter Performance Plaza’s demonstration kitchen at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History (@amhistorymuseum).

Join us for an afternoon of Armenian American culture as found in one of its most cherished celebrations: the wedding feast. Father-and-son chef duo Boris and Berj Ghazarian of Bark Barbecue Co. (@barkbbq) in Stevensville, Maryland, will be in lively conversation with acclaimed a cappella trio Zulal (@zulaltrio). As the Ghazarians prepare ghapama, a showstopping stuffed pumpkin, and manti, small meat-filled dumplings served with garlicky yogurt or tomato-sumac sauce, Zulal will share folksongs of love, beauty, and family. Moderated by journalist Liana Aghajanian (@liana.aghajanian), together, we will explore how this diverse diaspora preserves and adapts its culinary and musical heritage across generations and geography.

Accessibility services including ASL interpretation, live real-time captioning, and assisted listening devices are available for this program.

For first-time attendees: the front left lot is reserved for Exotics. All other parking is first come, first served. Swipe for the event map.

Event Guidelines:
⚫️ Respect the property and surrounding residents.
⚫️ No aggressive driving or excessive revving. Local law enforcement has been notified and may be present to help us keep this a safe and welcoming event for enthusiasts of all ages.
