June is Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month and it’s a topic that feels deeply personal to me as a dog mom. Here is why:

In a few months I’ll turn 40 and I’ve been reflecting on my 30s a lot. Nearly 9 years ago just days after my birthday I lost someone I was in love with to mental illness. Since then birthdays are different. While they are still a time of celebration they are also forever connected to a devastating loss. And each year as that date approaches the grief tends to feel a little heavier.

My dog at the time helped me so much in navigating that grief and sadness. He was there through some of the darkest days of my life. He couldn’t take away all the pain. But somehow his presence and unconditional love made it a little easier.

Looking back I think that’s one of the reasons losing him two years ago hit me so dang hard. I wasn’t just grieving a pet. I was grieving a companion who helped me survive some of the hardest chapters of my life. And honestly my dogs still help me today. They somehow make the hard days feel a little lighter. That’s one of the reasons I believe pets are so special. They can help us with things we never could have made it through alone.

That’s also one reason Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month matters. Too many men are struggling in silence because they were never taught that asking for help is a sign of strength.

If you’re struggling in any way please reach out to someone. A friend. A family member. A counselor. And if someone you care about seems different check in on them. Sometimes a simple conversation or reminder that someone cares can save a life. If you don’t know where to turn help is always available. You can call or text 988 anytime to connect with a trained crisis counselor.

And if you’ve lost a person, a pet or you’re navigating grief and loss of any kind be gentle with yourself. Give yourself grace. This affects all of us differently. It can change how we see the world how we experience it, our relationships / friendships and even parts of who we become.

I don’t think we ever truly get over the people or pets we lose. I think we learn how to build a life around the loss in a way by @barkingtruth

Lulu and Zoey before = feral AF

Then I started giving them @wuffes calming chews at night when it’s time to chill, which are made to help with stress, anxiety, and hyperactivity and suddenly it’s:

soft music
deep sleep
peace
a suspicious level of emotional stability

I like these because they’re actually built for daily use, not just emergencies, so I can use them before things I KNOW will send them into chaos mode like guests, random noises, or Lulu deciding she has opinions about everything.

They’re made with, L-theanine, Relora® , L-Tryptophan and chamomile to help keep them calm but still themselves… just slightly less unhinged and feral.

I’m not saying my house turned into a spa… but I did check to make sure they were still alive because it got way too quiet.

If your dogs operate like a mosh pit with no supervision… this might actually help. Highly recommend.

I can’t get @lulu.the.shepsky to finish her food … ever. This was one of the first times she actually finished it! No begging or bribing her with cheese! Gunni’s Arctic char + cod liver topper officially passed the picky husky test. Thank you @gunnispet and @pupfluence we can’t wait to try more!

This video hit me hard.

I’ve struggled with my mental health for as long as I can remember. And there were times in my life where the only reason I got up, the only reason I kept going, was because I had a dog who depended on me.

They didn’t judge me.
They didn’t think I was lazy.
They didn’t think I was broken.

There were days I didn’t get out of bed for myself.
But I got out of bed for them.
Because they needed to be fed.
They needed to go outside.
They needed me.

And somehow, in taking care of them,
they were taking care of me.

Dogs don’t know they’re saving you.
They just know they love you.

And sometimes, that kind of love
is what keeps a person here.

If the world were more like dogs…
we would be happier
with much less.

We would find joy
in ordinary days,
in long walks,
in quiet company,
in simply being together.

If the world were more like dogs…
no one would feel alone
while sitting right next to someone they love.

We would put our phones down,
rest our heads on each other’s shoulders,
and remember that presence
is the purest form of love
there is.

If the world were more like dogs…
we wouldn’t care who was right.
We would care who was hurting.
We would sit closer.
We would forgive faster.
We would choose love
over winning.

If the world were more like dogs…
we wouldn’t measure life
by how successful we were,
or how much money we made,
or how many people admired us.

We would measure life
by how many people
were happy to see us
when we walked through the door.

If the world were more like dogs…
we would love
with our whole hearts,
even knowing
that one day
our hearts would be broken.

Because dogs live every day
as if love
is the most important thing
in the world.

And maybe they’re right.

Maybe life isn’t about
how long we have,
or what we accomplish,
or what we leave behind.

Maybe life is just about
loving someone
while we’re here.

If you have a husky, you know they don’t just eat food. They evaluate it like a food critic with a personal grudge.

Lulu is extremely picky, so we tried the Gunni’s Arctic Char + Cod Liver food topper and she cleaned her entire bowl without me begging her to finish like I typically do. This topper is made with Icelandic fish and kelp, so it adds omega-3s, vitamins, and extra nutrients while also making food way more exciting for picky eaters.

Somewhere along the way,
a lot of us learned that love has to be earned.

That we have to be better, quieter, easier…
to be chosen.

Dogs don’t love like that.

They don’t measure you.
They don’t second guess you.
They don’t make you fight for your place.

They just decide—you’re theirs.
And that’s enough.

Dogs never ask us to be perfect.

They don’t care if we had a bad day, said the wrong thing, or feel like we’re falling apart.

They just stay.

They rest their head on us.
They remind us—without words—that we’re still worthy of love.
