🦉The Barn Owl Trust is delighted to welcome the news that the Barn Owl has been chosen to feature on the Bank of England’s next generation of banknotes, alongside the bee, puffin and hedgehog. 💷

The announcement follows a public consultation launched by the Bank of England on 3 June 2026, asking people across the UK which animals they would most like to see represented on future banknotes. 💚

Members of the public were invited to choose from a shortlist of 18 species across three categories: mammals; birds; and amphibians, insects and fish. The month-long consultation closed on 3 July, receiving an amazing 478,531 responses. The Barn Owl proved to be a clear favourite in the bird category, receiving an outstanding 270,596 votes.🗳

The Barn Owl (Tyto alba) is one of Britain’s most distinctive and recognisable birds, and although this result shows how much they are loved, they still face a range of pressures in the modern landscape, making continued conservation efforts essential. 🦉Marty the Tawny Owl💚

On the 22nd June 2026, an approximately ten-day old Tawny Owl chick was brought to the Barn Owl Trust. He had been found by a member of the public next to a river with no sign of a nest nearby.

The small owlet still had his eyes closed, was covered in fly strike, and was extremely dehydrated and hungry. The team provided much needed fluid and food, and spent a long while meticulously combing through his tiny feathers and fluff to remove the hazardous fly eggs.

Initially things did not look hopeful as the chick, now named Marty, was in such poor condition and was far too young to be away from its parents.
Miraculously, however, the chick gained strength with each passing day, and was soon more robust and getting increasingly vocal before mealtimes!

Marty gradually progressed from his initial box, up through different sizes of aviary, to one of BOT's mobile release aviaries, ready for his final stage of rehabilitation.
We are absolutely delighted to report that Marty was finally strong and independent enough to be released from our site this week. We will continue to provide support food from this aviary over the coming weeks to ensure him every success.

Little Reg is back, and better than ever! 🥳

This resilient barn owl made international news earlier this year, after being rescued 70 miles out at sea by the British Army Offshore Racing Team.

She was spotted struggling above the North Sea near Newcastle, desperately trying to find a way to land on the team's boat.

The team rescued her mid-race, and reached out to the @barn_owl_trust for help getting her ashore. Thanks to their efforts, and Dan from the Marine and Wildlife Rescue, Little Reg was taken safely back to shore, and brought to us at @rspca_east_winch

She was exhausted, dehydrated and thin and stayed with us for around five weeks.

We gave her fluids via a stomach tube, a cosy snuggle safe heat pad and offered her a meal - which she ate right away.

Once she started to put on weight, she was moved to our aviaries, and was ringed by the @btobirds Daily flying practice was also necessary to help her overcome some hesitancy on her wings.

Eventually, we got the good news. The vet signed her off for release back into the wild. Moments like this are so special, and so we reunited her with Dan for the next part of her journey - at a peaceful, soft release site.

🦉 Little Reg is finally free!🌊

We were delighted to be involved in the rescue of little Reg, the Barn Owl who found herself a very long way from home and in an extraordinary situation, lost at sea.⚓

Reg was released back into the wild, with supporters and media crews from BBC and ITV News there to share the moment.

Although Reg didn’t make her grand exit from the soft-release enclosure in time for the news cameras, she eventually took flight and we’re thrilled to say that she is now free and back where she belongs. 💚✨

It has taken a real team effort to get Reg to this point, and we’d like to thank everyone who played a part in her rescue, care and return to the wild, including the crew of the Fujitsu British soldier, Caister Independent Lifeboat, RSPCA East Winch Wildlife Centre and Marine and Wildlife rescue.

A huge thank you also to everyone who supported Reg along the way. 💚✨

From being lost at sea to flying free again what an adventure for one very special little Barn Owl! 🦉💚

🦉✨A Little Nest Box TLC✨🦉

From now until the end of the year can be a good time to give your Barn Owl nest box a little TLC. 💚

Over time, pellets, debris and nesting material from visiting species can build up inside the box. Giving it a clear-out helps keep it in good condition and ready for its next occupants.🦉🏡

🪜But before grabbing the ladder, be aware that young Barn Owls can continue returning to their nest site after fledging, so make sure they have fully dispersed and are no longer coming back before carrying out any work. 🔨

And remember, Barn Owl boxes aren’t just used during the breeding season. They can provide an important place to roost throughout the year, so the welfare of the birds should always come first, so choose a dry, calm afternoon for your nest box tidy-up.🦉✨
