On 29 April, a man wielding a knife attacked two men in Golders Green, a prominent Jewish neighborhood in north London. The assault came on the heels of a string of antisemitic incidents in the UK, including the burning of ambulances belonging to the orthodox community in the same London neighborhood and the fatal stabbing of two worshippers at a synagogue in Manchester in 2025. In response, the British government threatened to ban pro-Palestine groups, and, ahead of May’s regional elections, centrist and rightwing politicians railed against the left, accusing it of failing to take antisemitic violence seriously.

In this conversation, which took place on May 5 and was originally published in @equatormagazine, journalist Gavin Jacobson speaks to historian @barnaby.raine about the rise of antisemitism in the UK and elsewhere. This expansive and incisive discussion touches upon the media’s coverage of antisemitic violence, the challenges facing the left in this moment, and the role of Zionism in creating these conditions.

Anti-Jewish violence in London has sparked calls for ‘a national emergency’, with politicians promising to criminalise chants and ban pro-Palestine marches.

This rising antisemitism is real, but mainstream commentary on its meaning and causes has been worse than useless.

Equator co-founder @gavjacobson spoke to @barnaby.raine about the insidious logic of contemporary antisemitism and the moral panic deployed by those who claim to be “protecting Jews” from Muslims and the left.

Library Transmission: Black Marxism in Britain.

Barnaby Raine and The Otolith Collective

Wednesday 3 June, 6–8pm

@ibraazlondon

Historian @barnaby.raine explores the surprising utopias of Black Marxists in Thatcher's Britain, followed by a conversation with Anjalika Sagar and Kodwo Eshun of The Otolith Collective.

This lecture will revisit a distinctive Black Marxism in Britain in the 1970s and 1980s, to suggest that it offers resources for thinking about universal human freedom and strategies to get there.

Connecting well-known figures like Stuart Hall, Paul Gilroy, Darcus Howe and A. Sivanandan to the neglected pages of The Black Liberator and to revolutionaries in the Black Parents Movement, Brixton Black Women’s Group and Organisation of Women of African and Asian Descent (OWAAD), the lecture will chart a shared terrain of argument and its futures past.

Grappling with the dawn of our neoliberal present, Black Marxists produced a politics of free time and a criticism of every kind of nationalism that we might encounter differently now in a changed world, amid many crises in the slow death of Western civilisation.

Doors open at 5.30pm; event starts at 6pm and ends at 8pm.

The Otolith Collective are supported using public funding by Arts Council England.

London!

Join writer, historian, and barrister DK Renton at @housmans_books on the 8th of May in conversation with Barnaby Raine at the launch of Revolutionary Forgiveness: Beyond Moralism, Toward Liberation

Forgiveness is necessary in the long fight for a just world - but it is only possible after the oppressed are victorious.

Making a powerful call for a radical approach to forgiveness and justice, Renton speaks to some of the most challenging questions of our times - how do we build a radically transformed society when faced with the evils of fascism, abuse, and genocide? And what is to be done with those who have perpetrated such harm?

NEW NOVEMBER COURSE! The Grundrisse—or “Foundations of the Critique of Political Economy”—occupies a somewhat peculiar place in Karl Marx’s works.

Comprised of seven notebooks, it bridges what are sometimes categorized as Marx’s “early” humanist philosophical writings and his “mature” critique of political economy. It not only reveals surprising connections and continuities between these writings, but also includes investigations for the original and ultimately unfinished full scope of Capital, far beyond what we have in the completed Volume 1 and the posthumous Volumes 2 and 3, later sutured together by Friedrich Engels.

Dismissed by some as mere preparatory notes or transitory, incomplete arguments, others celebrate the unique concepts it introduces—like that of “general intellect”—and the ways it illuminates and clarifies Marx’s views on the development of modes of production, history, alienation, progress, capital as a self-expanding process, and so much of particular interest today.

Martin Nicolaus, who produced the first complete English translation of the Grundrisse in 1973, saw in the notebooks a wholly “unknown Marx,” upending dominant, dogmatic views of Marx that persist in many corners more than a half century later.

How does the Grundrisse challenge the image of Marx as an economistic, deterministic thinker? Or of historical materialism as based on a simplistic theory of history of linear progress through successive modes of production? Why has the Grundrisse found new life among a wide range of contemporary thinkers grappling with the vastly changed conditions of today?

“The Unknown Marx: an Introduction to the Grundrisse“ with @barnaby.raine starts online Sunday, November 16th.
