Italy 🇮🇹 2026: Macerata
The nostalgia! The charm! The core memories!

Emily and I met at the Macerata train station day one of our fall ‘06 term in Italy. Macerata is a quaint medieval walled city in the Marche region, a bit off the beaten path. We were both a little worse for wear upon arrival - I’d just been pickpocketed at Roma Termini and Emily was deathly ill with a respiratory bug. Nevertheless, we clicked immediately. Our hostel beds were side by side that first night; Emily floated me money for weeks until my replacement cards arrived (I promptly repaid her); every memory I have of that fall in Europe includes Emily, and that presence in each other’s lives has continued for the last 20 years. What a ride! Love you forever @em.s.ryan

Highlights from the re-visit: mental mapping all of our old haunts; finding our apartments (both under construction, oddly); reliving our classic date night at Palace (service as surly as ever, pizza still slaps); apertivo and porchetta panini in Piazza della Libertà; shopping (our fave pastime) 💚🤍❤️ taken in Macerata - Italy by @barrelswithag

Big Sur Marathon manifestations realized: we held hands, we ate snacks, we stopped for many photos, we didn’t hate running (or each other) after 26 miles in lockstep!
