✨ We love these photos shared by Rosa, one of our wonderful Willow Oak teachers!

📸
1️⃣ Exploring the woods – at Barrie, our 45-acre campus is an extension of the classroom.
2️⃣ Preparing food for snack – hands-on independence at work.
3️⃣ Discovering the lower school garden – learning how to care for flowers and vegetables while observing growth.
4️⃣ Caring for the environment – watering plants and nurturing our shared spaces.

At Barrie, Montessori education goes beyond the classroom. We empower children to grow into engaged, confident, and respectful citizens with a lifelong love of learning.

Rooted in the work of Dr. Maria Montessori, our program honors the formative first six years of life when children’s capacity to absorb and develop is at its peak. In our Lower School, we nurture independence, intrinsic motivation, confidence, and social responsibility through carefully prepared environments, multi-age classrooms, and uninterrupted work cycles.

We also partner with families by hosting classroom events, Parent Education Programs, and “Moving Up” tours to share the Montessori journey. Together, we are stewards of Dr. Montessori’s legacy, preparing children not just for school—but for life. 🌱✨

#TBT to our senior interviews at Barrie School 📚✨

Our seniors selected the questions they wished to answer from a curated list, creating thoughtful and engaging conversations. They reflected on why they chose to remain at Barrie School for their senior year, recognized the teachers and staff who made lasting impacts on their journeys, and shared advice for sophomores and juniors.

They also spoke about the colleges they are considering and the majors they are interested in pursuing. We concluded the interviews with a lighthearted round of Who’s Most Likely To, adding a fun and memorable close to the experience.

We are thrilled to announce that beginning in the 2026–27 school year, Barrie will offer the Global Impact Diploma (GID) as a dual diploma alongside the Barrie School diploma.

The Global Impact Diploma is an internationally recognized program that empowers students to make meaningful contributions to their local and global communities. It emphasizes student agency, purpose-driven learning, and well-being—preparing students to impact the world in positive ways.

Upper School students will complete traditional coursework across core subjects while also engaging in leadership and collaborative impact courses, specialized studies, and real-world experiences such as internships and apprenticeships.

Guided by six Global Impact Competencies—Drive, Impact Design, Collaboration, Empathy, Reflection, and Communication—learning will be interdisciplinary, flexible, and experiential, extending beyond the classroom and into the community. These same competencies will also be woven into our Elementary and Middle School programs to create a seamless pathway through Barrie.

By introducing the Global Impact Diploma to the DMV, Barrie continues to lead as an innovative, future-focused school, dedicated to learning that matters—to students and to the world.

Today's the day! Barrie School Athletics is hosting a full afternoon of games on campus today, Tuesday, Sep 22, and we want to see our community out in full force supporting our student-athletes!

Bring your Barrie spirit, bring your energy, and come cheer on our teams!

And what’s game day without a great snack? Playa Bowls will be on campus as a vendor! A portion of purchases will go directly back to supporting our school programs, so you can enjoy a treat while giving back to our students.

Let’s pack the sidelines and show our athletes what the Barrie community is all about!

We hope to see YOU there! Go Barrie! 💙🏆 by @barrieschool

🎂 Happy Birthday, Dr. Maria Montessori!

Today we celebrate the birthday of Maria Montessori, born August 31, 1870, whose groundbreaking approach to education continues to inspire how children learn, grow, and discover their place in the world.

At Barrie School, Montessori’s legacy is more than part of our history! It lives in our classrooms every day in students who follow their curiosity, learn through purposeful exploration, develop independence, and grow into confident, capable learners.

More than 150 years after her birth, Dr. Montessori’s belief in the potential of every child continues to shape our story and inspire what school can be.

Happy Birthday, Dr. Montessori! 🌱💙
