last weekend i met a man who flies to nyc every valentine’s day to visit his husband, whose ashes rest by a certain tree in central park. we crouched in the snow at dusk and held vigil until all light faded from the sky. out beyond the shadows, gaudy pink carriages blared mawkish love songs, but we were as oblivious to them as they were to us. before we left, he asked me to photograph him and his husband, together again once a year. these are shared with permission. taken in Central Park by @barronorthrup

@barronorthrup came back to town for a visit and we spent some time by the French Broad River thinking about how quickly some things change.

ID 1: a vertical color portrait of a young white man with medium length brown hair wearing a white shirt tenderly touching a dead plant. In the background is river water.

ID 2: a vertical color portrait of the same man looking directly at the camera.
