Thirty-three years ago today, we said, “I do”—for better or for worse.
Over the years, I’ve learned that marriage is never truly 50/50. Sometimes it’s 90/10. Sometimes it’s 10/90.

This year has brought more heartbreak than I ever thought we could endure. There were days when I could only give 10%, and without hesitation, he carried the other 90%.

Love isn’t measured by keeping score. It’s choosing to be strong when the other can’t. It’s quietly holding your own tears so theirs can fall without fear. It’s staying when life becomes unbearably heavy.

Tragedy has the power to tear a marriage apart. Ours has tested every part of who we are. Yet today, we are still standing—together.
I will always stand beside him to support him, behind him to catch him if he stumbles, or in front of him when he needs someone to lead the way. But no matter where I stand, he will never stand alone.

And today, just as I did 33 years ago, I still say...
“I do.”
For better. For worse. For whatever tomorrow brings.

Tomorrow is another milestone
of would’ve have been.

As Trinity’s Master of Science students
walk across the stage
to receive their hoods and diplomas,
Braxton would’ve been
third in line in the procession.

I would’ve been the first voice to rise above the crowd—
“That’s my boi!”
when they called his name.

But tomorrow,
the third chair will remain empty,
holding only the silhouette
of a black robe
where my son should’ve sat.

While parents gather to celebrate
the accomplishments of their sons,
two Trinity families
will face another cruel milestone
of would’ve have been.

Two young men, both only 22,
will be represented by fathers
accepting diplomas in their honor.

I do not know the other mother,
but I know her pain.
I do not have to touch her hand
to feel the weight of her loss.

I will not attend tomorrow.

I do not want to hear
the silent echo of his name being called.
I do not want to see
the third empty chair.
I do not want to watch families
freeze joy into photographs
while my own memories
are all I have left to hold.

Instead,
I will return to his last graduation.

I will remember how he walked
into that crowded auditorium,
his eyes searching the room
until they found mine.

And when our eyes locked,
he waved and mouthed the words,
“Hey Mama.”

And I answered,
