The God of Redemption (3/3)  The word for 2023 that God gave us for our family was “Freedom”. This year He freed us in our spirit in ways we couldn’t have imagined. In Job, the Lord showed us that although we face hardships and may never understand the “why,” His faithfulness endures, and He orchestrates everything for our good. He freed us from fixating on the “why,” from idolizing His gifts over His presence, and showed us that true joy and freedom are found in Him alone.

By God’s grace, He blessed us with another child, Poiema, our baby girl. As we mark the anniversary of the birth and heavenly return of our son Shiloh, our hearts are filled with gratitude. He has turned our mourning into dancing, our sorrow into joy and has taken our ashes and given us His beauty (Psalm 30:11-12, Jeremiah 31:13). We exalt God, for with Him, everything holds purpose. Like Job, we pray that our testimony will lead others to Jesus, illuminating His goodness, faithfulness and love in our journey so that He may be glorified across the earth.

To anyone experiencing loss, we extend our prayers and hope. May you turn to Christ and be encouraged that in Him, all things work together for your good. (Romans 8:28) by @barry_jb

The God of all Comfort (2/3)  Because the doctors’ visits became increasingly more encouraging, compounded with what we were learning in Job, we felt that something big was coming and that our son would be healed on this side of eternity. December 23rd, 2022, marked our last appointment. The doctors would have to deliver Shiloh because they saw fluid on his heart and throughout his body and needed him to be outside of the womb to treat him. It was “go” time and we were praying that God would allow us to have a safe delivery and meet our son. On December 24th, a year ago today, our son Shiloh was born. Natalia was under much anesthesia and couldn’t hear him, but I heard his voice. A cough that was more beautiful than any sound I had ever heard. Tragically, that was the only moment we shared with him; his heart and breathing stopped, and he returned Home to our Lord, Jesus. Our hearts were shattered. We didn’t know what to do so we turned to the Word of God. We sought God in the Psalms to be encourage, but our minds were flooded with the question “Why?”. Why had God allowed us to get pregnant at all if this was going to happen, why us? Why now? After weeks of struggling with these questions God again led us to Job. We hadn’t finished reading it before and God had more to show us there. As we read, we saw that sometimes we might not get the answer to why but when we experience heartache or loss, God is still in control, and because we are His, He is with us through the tears, and not one of them are wasted. The God of Faithfulness (1/3)

2023 was a year of stretching. Every year around this time, my wife and I pray to our God, seeking a singular word to guide our focus for the year. In 2022, the word we received was “Big.” Initially, it seemed odd, but as this word echoed in my spirit, we embraced it. 2022 would be a “Big” year.

Indeed, 2022 was huge. We were thrilled to discover our pregnancy, I embarked on a new career path, and my wife began her journey to become a doctor. We sensed big changes brewing, but what came was more than we could have imagined. We expected “big” to signify achievements and milestones- the physical, but God showed us that “big” was also about the faith we would need for the year.

Our faith was put to the test early in the pregnancy. During our 20-week appointment, our joy at expecting a son was coupled with concern; he showed signs of an underdeveloped heart. This news was devastating, but it propelled us to dive deeper into God’s Word, seeking His comfort and guidance. Our faith grew, and so did our son’s chances; the doctors became optimistic about the life-saving procedures he’d undergo after birth.

During this time, we were drawn to the book of Job. For those who don’t know, in this book, Job experienced tragedy and not because of any sin but actually because of his faith. Job’s life-long faithfulness led the devil to challenge him, yet God Who has all authority in the universe allowed this. Not because He received any joy from Job struggling, but in His wisdom, He knew it would reveal His character and lead more people to Him, while simultaneously refining Job. We aren’t perfect, but we found parallels between our lives and Job’s story. Neither one of us had read the entire book before but we knew how the story ended. God led us there and He parked us there, knowing what would come next. (Continued in the next post). by @barry_jb
