Linda Button paints the city the way it looks through glass. Her subjects are classic department store displays—mannequins, reflections, the blur of people passing by. Feminine. Edgy. Cool.
Her original oil paintings capture that layered world with richness and depth—and now, for the first time, the sketches behind them are available too. These drawings are the blueprints of her work, the starting point that shaped each canvas.

Linda Button moved to the District of Columbia in 1976 to work at the Library of Congress. After concluding an 18-year career at the library, she created her own art curriculum and has been sketching and oil painting ever since.

Her work has been influenced by the world of fashion, specific exhibits in the Met, and world famous designers. Within her sketches and oil on linen paintings, you’ll find that the mannequins play as the subjects while people can be glimpsed within window reflections, but always in a secondary role.

“Buy me! Wear me! Become me! What do they/we say about ourselves and our society?  The long established nexus of art and fashion invites iterative shimmering layers and luminosity as embodied in my oil paintings, collages, and monotypes.”

“My work builds on that of unsung artists: window dressers. It builds on the interaction of a carefully constructed still life with pedestrians, vehicles, macadam, brick, concrete, and glass. Indispensable glass, the transparent yet reflective barrier between Inside and Outside.”
