Last Monday, during the Boxtel Pig Save, we bore witness to thousands of pigs passing by in trucks at the slaughterhouse over the course of three hours. Afterward, our group of activists held a one-minute silence to remember all the pigs being forced into gas chambers and killed inside, all because of human choices. As we stood together in silence, the screams of the pigs echoed in the background. A brutal reality. That contrast hit me deeply and is still with me. These pigs are crying out; they want to be seen and set free. If only we have the courage to look, listen and change. Will you join us at the next Boxtel Pig Save on Monday, December 7th? @animalsavenederland Photos / post by @bartstaassen • • • #animalliberation #animalmovement #animalrights #veganism by @bartstaassen

Today, @marloes.ftanimals and I organized the Boxtel Pig Save at the Vion slaughterhouse in Boxtel (NL) for the first time on behalf of @animalsavenederland 🐖 A total of 44 activists from the Netherlands, Germany, and Belgium were present, an amazing turnout for the pigs. We want to show you that this exploitation must stop. At Vion alone, around 17.000 innocent pigs are killed every single day. All pigs are individuals who deserve a free life. Bear witness. Save lives. Go vegan! Will we see you at the next vigil? 📷 by @bartstaassen • • • #boxtelligsave #veganism #vigil #animalmovement #animalliberation by @bartstaassen

Pig Vigil 2026. Boxtel, The Netherlands. Vion Slaughterhouse. Video by @bartstaassen 'This is our time The legacy of greed has grown from its seed To infiltrate every place Every face Releasing a suffering recorded in Stone And in bone So old that language can't console it This was the blow which we struck At first without knowing how deep it would grow. It would grow Into a frightening history that fractures hope First, by attacking the body And then, by distorting the mind It would grow And force us to question whether we are a part Of this world or its affliction.' 📚 Book recommendation: Zoopolis by Sue Donaldson & Will Kymlicka. Last year, I read Zoopolis: A Political Theory of Animal Rights, and I keep coming back to it. It is an inspiring and hopeful book that has genuinely changed the way I think about our relationship with animals. Donaldson and Kymlicka argue that animal rights are not only about protecting animals from exploitation and suffering, but also about political and social justice. They distinguish between three groups. Domesticated animals should be co-citizens, with inclusion and political representation. Wild animals belong to sovereign communities, whose autonomy we should respect. Liminal animals, such as pigeons, ducks, and mice, are residents of our shared human environments, with rights suited to their particular relationship with us. What I find most powerful is the shift from seeing animals as property, food, pests, or simply “nature” to recognising them as fellow inhabitants of a shared world. The book reframes a crucial question: Not “What do animals owe us?” But “What do we owe animals?” • • • #books #zoopolis #aninalliberation #animals #mustread by @bartstaassen
