Over the years I have been very fortunate and very blessed to have worked with many players, coaches, and families. I hear coaches all the time ask their players why they play the game? I watch coaches and parents get angry because the players don’t do what they want them to do. But the fact of the matter is baseball and softball are both games of bringing people together. This may sound like philosophical b.s., but it is the point of view from someone who has done this a long time.

Start enjoying the journey that baseball and softball creates. If you are a player enjoy every day that you are on a field. Because there will come a time that the game will tell you that you are no longer a player. If you are a coach, enjoy each pitch, each moment, and each play because that player you are coaching will be moving on to bigger and better things if you do your job. If you are a parent enjoy your son or daughter’s journey. Because those are the moments that you are going to cherish.

My life and career has been shaped by the lessons that I learned on the field and not by my accomplishments. No one will remember the state championship, the World Series, or the all star game. But what shapes you as a person are the days spent in the cage, the weight room, or in the field. I ran into a guy from my home town in an airport. He didn’t bring up any of my things I did as a player, he brought up the fact that he remembered me for being the crazy kid that shoveled off the football field in the middle of winter to long toss.

With my dad gone now and at 47 I would give anything to be on that field with him right now throwing on a 27 degree day. taken in Boston, Massachusetts by @baseballscienceguy

Attention Travel Ball Parents and Players! What do you have planned for your kids downtime starting in October through November? If you do not have this time planned please do. I have spoken with families and players around this time of year for the past ten years and it is the same exact thing with each conversation. The kids are frustrated, tired, and fighting with their parents because of performance. I will share with you a very unpopular opinion……. Walk away from the game for four weeks.

Down time from baseball and softball is not only needed, but necessary. So parents and players for the love of the game, please schedule four weeks off this year! And what I mean about that is hide the bats, hide the balls, and hide the gloves for a schedule month. Then watch how much better the player becomes with that mental and physical break. The best possible time to do this is from October 15 - November 15. There is a college recruiting black out and a pro scouting blackout. Which means that no scouts or coaches can watch you play. So take this time to relax, recharge, and go be a kid taken in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida by @baseballscienceguy
