Asia Shcherbakova is presenting at SCAPPS 2026, the conference of the Canadian Society for Psychomotor Learning and Sport Psychology, in Ottawa this week.

The presentation is about sensing as a skill. When an instructor says "bring the arms to shoulder height," the learner has to be able to feel whether they did. That ability varies widely from person to person, and it develops with practice.

Asia's research draws on ten years of refining the Baseworks Method with more than 10,000 learners. It identifies three types of body awareness: proprioceptive, spatial and interoceptive. In all three, telling sensations apart comes first. Relating to them, and using them to adjust behavior, follow from that.

For movement education, this means teaching people to perceive is part of teaching the movement.

Picture a world where people have the same eyes we do, but vision is only ever used to find the door and avoid walking into walls. That world's health press writes about vision the way ours writes about proprioception: decline after 40, a thirty-second daily exercise, fewer collisions with furniture. Anything more refined is left to specialists. Asia Shcherbakova's new essay opens with this thought experiment.

The peice looks at why some senses get a shared vocabulary and others don't, and at how a sensation can be shared when there's nothing to point at together.

ㅤ
Filmé le 3 septembre à Espace Libre (@espacelibre), le nouvel épisode du podcast Baseworks Transmission porte sur le rituel, la fatigue, le deuxième souffle et ce que la performance fait à un public sans que cela s'explique.
ㅤ
L'épisode sort cette semaine, si tout va bien.
ㅤ
Prochaine création de la compagnie : Hors-d'œuvre, solo avec James Phillips (@jjphillips1981), Théâtre La Chapelle (@la_chapelle_sc), 23 au 26 septembre. Billets : lien dans la bio de @compagniecatherinegaudet.

ㅤ
Catherine Gaudet builds her pieces to leave the spectator with a problem to solve. The idea was developed in her master's thesis, Ambiguity as a Vector of Sensation, and has guided her work since. Each piece draws several lines of meaning at once. In the studio she works with her dancers through forces and images toward an almost telepathic understanding, and remains a spectator of her own work.
ㅤ
Filmed September 3 at Espace Libre, the newest Baseworks Transmission podcast episode covers ritual, fatigue, a second wind, and what performance does to an audience that cannot be explained.
ㅤ
The episode is due out this week, fingers crossed.

Ask a room of healthy adults what a muscle feels like at rest, when nothing is happening to it. In our survey, fewer than half reported feeling anything at all.
ㅤ
That finding was part of the poster Baseworks brought to the 8th Body Representation Network Meeting in Padova this June. Asia Shcherbakova presented a framework built from close to ten years of movement data, drawn from more than 10,000 learners: three trainable components of how the brain represents the body. Each has its own failure pattern and its own way of being trained. On the second day, she joined the panel for early-career researchers.
ㅤ
@bodyrepnetwork, connects researchers across neuroscience, clinical work, and psychology working on body representation: what it's made of, how it's measured, and what changes it. Its annual meeting brings that community into one room. Those are also the questions Baseworks is built on, approached through structured practice.
ㅤ
On the first day, the meeting was held in the University of Padova's Palazzo del Bo. It houses the world's first permanent anatomical theatre.

@anginedepoitrine play inside full papier-mâché heads. Nobody in the crowd knows who they are. This summer about seventy thousand people came to their free Montreal Jazz Festival show anyway.
ㅤ
The costumes began as a joke on their hometown crowd. Then the band noticed the masks did something they hadn't planned: with their heads covered they can't see well, so they play by feel, moving between the notes on muscle memory. A constraint they never asked for changed how they play.
ㅤ
The new essay from @patrickoancia starts from moments like that and traces one shift through his own history. Long rides where, at full effort, the texture of the road and the changing light came forward. A skateboard that began to feel like part of the body. A stage where the rehearsed parts fell away and what was left was the song.
ㅤ
From there the essay moves into music, where @jacobcollier explains one chord until it becomes a place with a pull toward somewhere else.
ㅤ
Something loud quiets, and something finer comes forward. The essay is about learning to notice that shift, and what opens when you stay with it. The body is the one place that never switches off, which is where a Baseworks practice does its work.
ㅤ

Try Googling "how do dancers experience their body."
.
What you'll find is body image, eating disorders, and identity — almost nothing about what it actually feels like.
.
Where did the phenomenology go?
And why is AI better at describing what a trained body feels like than the people who actually have one?
.
In her new article on the Baseworks Blog, Asia Shcherbakova highlights how perceptual depth becomes a status marker and why having a body might be the very thing that blocks us from talking about it. Link in bio.

On June 8–9, Baseworks presents at BRNet in Padova, Italy. BRNet is the Body Representation Network, an international research conference on how the brain constructs and maintains a sense of the body. This year's theme is "The Uncanny Body."
ㅤ.
Asia Shcherbakova's presentation: "Three Trainable Components of Body Representation: Evidence from a Decade of Naturalistic Perceptual Skills Training."
ㅤ.
The conference draws researchers working across clinical and neurological body representation science. Our presentation asks what limits body representation in healthy individuals, and what changes with structured practice.
ㅤ.
Three components with distinct neural substrates and distinct training approaches: proprioceptive awareness, spatial awareness, and interoceptive awareness. Ten years of naturalistic data. Link in bio for details on the presentation and conference.

What does a muscle feel like from the inside when nothing is happening to it? Not sore, not stretched, not burning from effort. Just at rest.
.
For most people, the honest answer is nothing. The signal isn't absent. The attention to detect it hasn't been built.
.
Most physical practice is oriented to what it looks like, because that's what can be photographed. Inner attention doesn't show up in a photo. @patrickoancia’s new article is about what develops when attention has somewhere to show up: a finer-grained capacity to detect internal sensations and hold attention on them long enough for something to register. The capacity carries. A coder catches the inconsistency in a passage that didn't look like it needed a second read. A teacher notices which child has gone quiet. A forester picks up the early signs of a tree under stress. The same underlying skill. Article Link in bio.

On May 11 in Montreal, Ksenia Shcherbakova returns this year to present current Baseworks research at the 27th Annual Neuropsychology Day and Brenda Milner Lecture, hosted at @theneuro_mni, the Montreal Neurological Institute at McGill University.
.
Her presenation is titled "Predictable Failure Patterns in Non-Habitual Movement: Evidence for Undertrained Degrees-of-Freedom Control." It documents a class of predictable failure patterns in healthy adults, where movement coordination breaks down in specific non-habitual tasks regardless of general physical background, and points to a central process that appears systematically undertrained in the adult population.
.
Ksenia presents from 2:30 to 3:45 PM. The event runs 11:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Free and open to the public.
