Three weeks ago I posted about my nephew calling me out.

This week we stood on the summit together. 5,895 meters. He's 17, and I'm thankful he asked me to take him. It was an epic adventure to share.

Summiting Kilimanjaro has a lot in common with being a founder.

You start at midnight, in the dark, in the cold, and you can't see the top. You have no clue what you're truly getting into, but you trust yourself and your training to go somewhere you've never gone before.

Then you start your "pole pole," Swahili for "slowly, slowly," trek up the mountain.

The guides on the mountain are like mentors in life. They give you their experience to support you. But you're the one who has to put one foot in front of the other and find your way to the top.

Ziad and I found our way.

Like everything in life worth doing, this pushed me out of my comfort zone and tested my physical and mental limits. That's when real growth happens. Not once did I doubt we'd make it, but we suffered on that dark hike up.

Then we reached the top at sunrise. We made it to the roof of Africa. There are maybe a handful of moments in life you know are special while they're happening. Standing there with Ziad as the sun came up was one of them. by @basharaboudaoud

$2.5 billion in August. $10 billion in September.

Instinct, a one-year-old AI assistant you text or call like a person, quadrupled its valuation in about a month. It negotiates bills, cancels subscriptions, books trips and files paperwork. It is still invite only.

It is not alone. Meta launched Muse on WhatsApp, iOS, Android and the web, with 3.6 billion daily users behind it. SpaceXAI launched Grok Bot, a team of bots that each run on their own cloud computer. It passed 418,000 weekly users in its first month.

All three want the same thing. Your logins.

Whoever holds them sits between you and every app, merchant and service you use. Google won search and decided which websites got found. Apple and Google won mobile and decided which apps got installed, taking a cut of the sales in their stores. Each time, a handful of companies became the toll booth between users and everyone else. Agents are the next toll booth. The question is who collects.

Everyone says technology is about to change the world. Very few people stop to explain what that actually means. Or how it will affect you.

In November 2024 I started writing UpRound. No plan. No calendar. Just a need to get my thoughts out of my head and onto a page.

I had no idea what I was getting myself into.

Nearly two years later, UpRound has made me a better investor and a better learner. It gave me a way to channel my curiosity. The process is simple. Learn it, investigate it, write it. When you have to explain something in plain language, you find out fast whether you really understand it.

I don't just write about tech companies. Some of them I've personally invested in. When that's the case, I say so clearly, and I write about them using only publicly available data. Being an investor forces me to be more rigorous.

In the last few months alone I've written about the comeback of small nuclear, who actually wins quantum, the economics of humanoid robots, and why compute is now being used as collateral.

Along the way I realized I'm not alone. A lot of people sit exactly where I do. They're curious, busy and tired of the jargon.

Before anything disrupts my life, I want to understand what the tech overlords are actually saying.

That's why UpRound is now weekly. For the first time, I feel more confident about what's coming round the corner. I hope you will too.

AI has a power problem, and it is reviving a source of power America nearly stopped building a generation ago.

Not the giant plants of the past. Those became too slow and too expensive to build.

What is coming back is different; small reactors, built in a factory and running years sooner. In August the US government backed five companies to build them. Three had run nuclear for half a century. Two were startups that did not exist a decade ago.

The demand behind it is only beginning. Data centers alone are on track to double their power use by 2030, and the grid was not built for that.

Syria’s first Art Week put Damascus back on the cultural map.
47 Syrian artists in a building scarred by war, empty for years, open again.

One of them, photographer Ghaith Alsayed, exhibited his images of the regime falling.

He said standing next to them still felt surreal, because before December 2024 he never imagined he would be in Damascus at all.

AGI on Monday. A one in ten chance we are all dead by Friday. That was last week.

While everyone argues about the apocalypse, a fence is quietly trying to go up around the whole technology.

The fight was never man against machine. It is the few against the many, a handful of companies who want AI to be theirs, and our fear is what they build the fence with.

Open models are already bigger than the fence, and they are not waiting for permission.
