The day I believed I was retiring from #rescue, apparently. Hahaha. Not on yer Nelly. I #adopted out beloved Ruthie, named after @ruthbaderskinsburgofficial, by her new servant #adopter @dezinpub on the day I foolishly thought I was bowing out. The crate was bent and uncooperative so we binned it and took this finale shot for my archives. Well of course that was rubbish, even though I swore unless it’s on my doorstep, which did happen, I was done. Also Kiara was a first time cat owner but was so passionate about Ruthie, I went with my feelings and trusted her. How right I was. Ruthie is loved and now has a sister. Thanks Kiara for stepping up to do it all as well as you did. If only all adoptions were as loving and smart. Makes it worthwhile. I loved that little black girl playing and growing bolder and she wasn’t 100% socialised but you worked hard to give her what she needed. #adoptdontshop #dontshopadopt🐾❤️ #myfavoritebreedisrescued by @basiazamorska

Portrait of Basia, 2026, 24” x 18” acrylic on linen

The other day I ran into my friend Basia Zamorska. @basiazamorska We hadn’t seen each other for a long time. The first thing she said to me was, “Please paint me before I die.”
I found those words deeply moving. Not because I worry about Basia, she has faced one health challenge after another for years, and somehow she seems to overcome obstacles rather than be stopped by them. What touched me was that, in one sentence, she expressed something fundamental about portraiture.
We often think of portraits as records of appearance, but perhaps they are really acts of recognition. To ask someone to paint you is to say: see me while I am still here.
Every portrait carries an awareness of mortality, whether spoken or not. We paint faces because faces disappear. The portrait cannot prevent death, but it can resist oblivion. It says: this person lived, this person mattered, this person looked back at the world.
Basia’s request reminded me why I have spent so much of my life painting people. by @basiazamorska

The girl in the polaroid. 1995.
One of my first fashion test shoots. Taken at the Morgan Hotel in NYC. I was there assisting @nick_knight who was shooting Robert Deniro for George Magazine and I managed to organise an after hours test shoot with the lovely and funny @beingbrighdie who lent her time and considerable beauty for the test. My darling #brothersbyanothermother. #lupin #grooms #valentine daily and then wrestles. I am so happy they’re in love even though there’s no lapcat for me. As long as they are happy together, I won’t begrudge them. #clowns, #hooligans and utter #sweethearts. I have only ever had one cat before, in London, and lil #Genesis (yes from #prog to #industrial) but Valentine showed signs of really missing his last older and poorly #sister #Byron. I followed my gut and after crying because he hid under the bed, I was so relieved to see them tustling on the bed. #september #roses, mini ones. They cry out for sun, so are placed on the #cottagehospital #stoop and are happy and tiny. They don’t mind the giant #canna #lillies that are new and towering round these parts but my goodness when my neighbor gave me a hand full of #corms and told me just to #plant them anywhere, I didn’t expect a #tropical corner of @brooklynbotanic. “They’re like weeds”. He wasn’t wrong. Our beautiful, elegant new friend a praying mantis, care of @kvsbailey in her scented hosta. She seems to have a schedule; early am and sundown. Mesmerizing to watch her swing on those fragile legs and her head rotation. I’ve only ever seen green ones by the river in DUMBO before the wasteground that housed them was built on. #mantisreliogiosa? It was a lot hotter than it looks. I’ve never worn @Dickies before despite dressing many clients in them and feck me they were hot. Better perspiring than accumulating #tics though. But a former #stylist has to hold it together and hike them up when the #overalls are sliding down. Good job my @johnnymarrgram #johnnyfuckinmarr #tshirt is long. Unforch the #rock @nicola_tyson invited me onto to organise myself burned my bum, but all in a day’s #hike next to #wildflower rolling #hills onward to the cool #creek. And yes that is @mohonkmountainhouse #watchtower in the far distance. Who knew all these years later I’d be seeing that bonkers (at the time) edifice from here?
