I did it!
It was a long and exhausting day yesterday.
The surgery is over! The recovery can begin. 🐾
I was very brave and courageous.
I’m staying strong, but when I move I wince from the pain.🥹
Last night I got to sleep cuddled up with Mom. (Normally I always sleep in my crate, so I could get used to this!)🥰
Peeing is going well.

Happy World Animal Day! 🐾❤️

No presents for me today.
But last week I got a lovely new bed, a beautiful sweater, a cosy warm winter coat, a stock of yummy treats and a gorgeous decorative collar.
So… am I spoiled?! 😇

Today I realised that I’m pampered every single day. I have everything I need and actually, I have more than enough. In fact… I’m pretty spoiled! 🥰

That’s why I’m more than happy that Mom regularly donates treats, toys and other goodies to doggies who have to make do with a little less. ❤️🐾

My highlight of the weekend:
Spending time together, enjoying the beautiful weather, and covering 10 km and 5 km with my little legs! 🚀

Sometimes, choices are easy to make.
Sometimes, they are obvious.
But sometimes, there is no right or wrong choice.
In fact, sometimes it feels like none of the choices are the right one. 💔

Add unconditional love and the emotional weight of it all, and you are faced with an impossible choice.🥹
Follow your gut feeling. Follow your heart. Keep your head in the game.

It has been a tough week. My sweet dogmom has definitely had more than enough worries to deal with because of me.
She has decided that she is not going to have me undergo surgery. (For those who don’t know what this is about, you can find the story in my previous posts.)
There is no guarantee that if we were to operate on my little leg, I wouldn’t have problems afterwards.
There could also be complications, or simply consequences resulting from the surgery.

So, my sweet dogmom is trusting her instincts and making this decision purely out of love and because she believes it is what is best for me.
She hopes that I can continue for a long time before I start experiencing real pain or before any major problems arise.

She will keep a close eye on me, and as soon as she notices anything, she will of course seek the necessary medical help immediately.

I’m turning two next month, and I’ve already been through so much.
But for now, I am allowed to enjoy life. 🐾

When your dog’s next step is anything but simple… 🐾💔

After an X-ray under anesthesia, we received some difficult news. 🥹

Basil has already undergone an osteotomy on the right front leg. Both bones were surgically cut, rotated to the correct angle and aligned, then secured with a plate and screws.

The surgery itself was successful and the latest X-rays show that the plates and screws are still positioned correctly. ❤️‍🩹

But there is another problem.

The wrist and paw are now collapsing, causing an abnormal stance. One possible solution is an arthrodesis, a surgical procedure that stabilizes and fuses the affected joints. (Wrist, foot and tiny toes)

And now comes the hardest part:

Do we operate again… or do we wait and see? 🥹

Neither option comes with a guarantee.

Surgery could improve stability, but it also carries risks. Waiting could avoid another operation, but may allow further strain and compensation throughout the body.

Over time, either scenario could potentially contribute to problems such as arthritis, elbow or shoulder issues, or neck and back problems caused by compensation.💔

There is no simple answer.
Just a difficult decision, made with one goal in mind:

giving Basil the best possible quality of life. 🐶❤️

🩻 X-ray update on my paw

Today, I underwent anesthesia to have new X-rays taken to carefully evaluate the operated leg. 🐾

The X-rays show that the plate and screws are in good position following the previous osteotomy, which is reassuring.
However, the leg still shows an abnormal alignment, meaning the position of the paw/leg is not as expected.

One of the surgical options that may be considered in cases like this is an arthrodesis:
a procedure in which a joint is surgically fused to provide stability and improve function.

An arthrodesis can be performed in cases of severe joint instability, damaged ligaments or painful and severely affected joints, when preserving normal joint movement is no longer the best option. In my situation this involves my wrist, foot and all my tiny toes.🥹

For now, the X-rays give us important information to understand the current situation and determine the next step. 🐾🤍🥹 by @basil.theweeniedog

Unfortunately, I have some bad news.
The position of my leg is really dramatic.💔
All hands are on deck at the vet’s.

I’ve been given an injection and I’m feeling a little groggy now. 💉
In a little while, I’ll be sedated again and they’ll take more X-rays of my leg. 🐾

The X-rays will be sent straight to the orthopaedic specialist.
Unfortunately, my orthopaedic specialist has retired in the meantime.

Mom is very sad and will be so happy when she can come and pick me up later this afternoon. by @basil.theweeniedog
