Ever wonder why your jump shot feels flat or why you can’t get your elbow up?
Most players think it’s a form issue — but for some, it’s actually a mobility issue.

You can’t fix what your body can’t physically do.
If your shoulder can’t reach full flexion (the ability to lift your arm overhead without compensating), your elbow will never get up properly — no matter how many reps you take.

That’s why shoulder mobility matters for shooters.
āœ… It helps you create a higher release point
āœ… Reduces stress on your wrist and elbow
āœ… Keeps your shot more consistent through fatigue

Try testing your shoulder flexion — keeping your spine straight and ribs down.
If you can’t reach at least 90° without compensating, it’s not a shooting drill you need… it’s a mobility fix.

Parents of basketball players — pay attention to the small signals.

A lot of youth basketball injuries don’t happen suddenly.
They start with warning signs that often get ignored.

Things like:

• Knee pain after practice
• Heel pain when running
• Ankles that ā€œkeep bothering themā€
• Tightness in the back or hips

These are often early signs of overuse injuries.

The good news: many basketball injuries are preventable when young athletes build the right habits early.

I put together a free guide for basketball parents called:

ā€œ5 Simple Habits Every Basketball Player Should Build to Stay Injury-Free.ā€

It walks through simple things young athletes can do to stay healthier through long seasons.

You can download it free at the link in my bio.

Pain-free does not always mean game-ready.

Before returning to basketball after an ankle sprain, the ankle should be able to prove it can handle more than just walking and jogging.

These are 5 tests I like:

1. Knee-to-wall dorsiflexion
2. Single-leg calf raises
3. Quick pogo hops
4. Lateral bounds
5. Single-leg box drop and stick

None of these tests are perfect by themselves, but together they give a better picture of whether the ankle is ready for the speed, fatigue, and chaos of basketball.

Return to play should be based on function, not just time and pain levels.

If you have jumper’s knee, complete rest can make the pain calm down, but that doesn’t mean your tendon is ready for basketball again.

For most athletes, the better long-term strategy is finding the right amount of load and progressively rebuilding capacity.

Here are 5 things I’d rather see you do than simply stop everything:

1. Use isometrics like Spanish squats, wall sits, or knee-extension holds
2. Keep moving with comfortable, normal-paced walking
3. Continue training the rest of your body
4. Progressively strengthen the knee and patellar tendon
5. Reduce the specific loads that are irritating it

The goal isn’t zero stress.

It’s giving your tendon an amount of stress it can tolerate, then gradually preparing it for the jumping, landing, sprinting, and decelerating that basketball demands.

Getting out of pain is only part of rehab.

Getting back to being a durable basketball player is the goal.

You can do EVERYTHING right this offseason…

Lift. Shoot. Condition. Play pickup. Improve your game.

But if you get injured, all that progress can come to a screeching halt.

I learned this the hard way going into my junior year of high school. I injured my knee right as preseason practices were beginning, missed all of preseason and our first few games, and spent the rest of the year feeling like I was playing catch-up.

That experience is part of why we created the 2-Week Basketball Body Durability Starter. šŸ€

Just 10–15 minutes a day designed to complement the training you’re already doing and help improve the mobility, stability, strength, and recovery your body needs to better handle the demands of basketball.

You’ve spent months trying to move forward.

Please do not let an injury send you backward!

Start with 2 weeks.

ā€œKnee painā€ isn’t a diagnosis.

Where it hurts, when it hurts, how it started, what you’ve been doing, and what movements bother it all matter.

Patellar tendon pain. Patellofemoral pain. Osgood-Schlatter. Meniscus problems. These are just a few.

But they can all get described as ā€œmy knee hurtsā€ but they shouldn’t automatically be treated the same way.

Before searching for random knee exercises, figure out what type of problem you’re actually dealing with and what loads your knee is struggling to tolerate.

Better diagnosis → better rehab → better chance of staying on the court.

I’m not your basketball skills trainer. šŸ˜‚

I’m probably not the guy to give you ankle-breaking handles, fix your jumper, or turn you into a dunk contest champion.

But if you want your body to move well, stay strong, handle the demands of basketball, and stay on the court…

That’s my lane.

At Basketball Movement Lab, we help players build the mobility, strength, stability, and movement foundation they need to stay healthy and keep developing.

Because your skills, athleticism, and strength don’t matter nearly as much if your body can’t consistently handle the game.

**The best ability is availability.**

One of the best injury prevention strategies in basketball?

**Keep strength training during the season.**

Troy assistant coach @larrycordaro talked about how their program stayed relatively healthy by consistently lifting and doing prehab work (even during the season.)

A lot of teams train hard in the offseason, then back way off once games start.

But basketball is demanding. If you want athletes to stay healthy, strong, and available late in the season, you have to keep building and maintaining their physical capacity.

**ā€œAn ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.ā€**

What’s the most lopsided trade in basketball history? šŸ€

Kareem to the Lakers? SGA and a pile of draft picks to OKC?

Neither compares to the greatest exchange of all time.

2 Corinthians 5:21 tells us that Jesus, who never sinned, took our sin so that through Him we could receive His righteousness.

We don’t earn our way to God with a good spiritual résumé.

Jesus paid the debt we couldn’t pay.

When we trust in Christ, we don’t stand before God based on **our record, we stand in His.**

That’s the greatest trade of all time. āœļø

Balance drills are important after an ankle sprain.

But they are not magic.

Standing on one leg can help rebuild proprioception and control, but basketball demands more than that.

Your ankle still needs to handle:

Speed.
Force.
Bad positions.
Landing.
Cutting.
Fatigue.
Contact.
Chaos.

Balance drills can be part of ankle rehab.

But they shouldn’t be the whole plan.

The goal isn’t just better balance.

The goal is building an ankle that can handle basketball.

Most basketball players don’t actually rehab ankle sprains.

They just wait until they can play again.

But rest alone doesn’t rebuild the things basketball demands:

Mobility.
Strength.
Balance.
Force absorption.
Confidence.
Cutting, landing, and reacting at game speed.

The goal isn’t just to make the ankle feel better.

The goal is to make it trustworthy again.

You can completely rupture ankle ligaments… and still not always need surgery.

But that does **not** mean a Grade III ankle sprain is ā€œno big deal.ā€

Severe ankle sprains can affect:

• Mechanical stability
• Proprioception
• Balance
• Force absorption
• Landing mechanics
• Knee and hip movement patterns

The biggest mistake is assuming that because pain and swelling are gone, the ankle is fully ready for basketball again.

Return to play should be based on function, not just time.
