Returning to paradise after back2back winters. New volcano unlocked 🇲🇸 and back to México after 8 years. Sending big hugs to my guides @itzelcoria & @jameschristiemusic, that was a VERY COOL TRIP ☺️

Here’s what we’ve got!

Road tripping the South Island is cool - not for the landscape (there isn’t a single active volcano down there 🥱), but for its wildlife! Good chance to practice some Te Reo too - here you go:

People & Volcanoes | We talked a lot about how communities incorporate volcanism into their lives at @citiesonvolcanoes - here are some visuals around that topic 📸

1&2 - After a stormy night camping on the summit of Santa Maria we got company from the local villages in the early morning hours. The summit is a common place for prayers and social gatherings - campfires and BBQs were quickly ignited with approximately 30 people arriving in sometimes pretty colourful ponchos. A casual Wednesday morning on 3,700m. 80km-distant Fuego is far in the background.

3 - Together with our local guide we decided to put our tents up right at the top…

4 - …before his tent got destroyed by the storm and we had to relocate ours to a more sheltered part of the summit. Turned out this new spot was nearby one of the fireplaces for the BBQs, so it got a lil smokey in the morning 🔥

5 - Santiaguito in full action. It’s a young volcano (basically a big pile of viscous lava) that grows inside a collapsed part of Santa Maria and occasionally sends ash to Quetzaltenango (Xela), 10km away on the other side of the mountain.

6 - Meanwhile in La Antigua (old capital of Guatemala), Easter ceremonies are kicking off. A traditional part of processions (in this case Domingo de Cuaresma) are carpets made of flowers and coloured wood. The detail and passion with which those carpets are made is pretty impressive, and perfectly fit into Guatemalas colourful life 🌈

7 - Just under 20km distance lay between Antigua and Volcán de Fuego. Fuego and nearby Acatenango are PACKED with tourists (and tourists and volcanoes is another topic). Fuego is volcano, brother, shelter, playground and oracle all at the same time, and sometimes also does what volcanoes do.

8 - Occasionally, Fuego produces bigger eruptions, and often people on the threatened flanks are asked to evacuate (which is their own decision). This bridge is part of an evacuation route across a nearby river.

9 - Talking about moving and transportation. We had a companion on our way up Acatenango - with two more volcanoes in the background (Agua and Pacaya), all within 30km of the capital Guatemala City.

Over the last 3 weeks I’ve learned a lot about the place where there is fire, Chi Q’aq’, and those who live on its flanks. While it occasionally brings a lot of devastation, it remains home to those living close by - and part of volcanology is to respect that connection.

I personally process a lot through photography, and I’m glad I got a chance to experience both the dark as well as the beautiful sides of Volcán de Fuego. The first photo is of an explosion at 3.24am on 21 February 2024, the second photo is 3 days after the 3 June 2018 eruption - an event which also motivated me to begin my doctoral studies in volcanology to contribute something to help mitigating volcanic risks. Being 3 months away from submission I’m happy that I had the chance to experience Chi Q’aq’ from a new perspective 🌋

Ticking off a childhood dream - and one of the best assignments I’ve ever sent myself on 📸 Now I know that this means 3 days without sleep (NYE obvsl, but also can’t sleep the night before bc I’m excited) and fighting for a spot to set up the tripod. Media wouldn’t let me in… rude. Maybe next year. Also first time I cycled to an airport 🚴🏻😂
