Jesus & The Scarecrow Why is the image of Jesus on the cross such a powerful logo for the Christian church?  What are the pre Christian origins of the Easter festival? The earth was considered female. In spring, around the time of equinox, pagan famers plant the (male) seed to fertilise the earth, and provide a crop; thus new birth after the long winter. There is also a tradition of male human sacrifice at the time of planting; to appease the gods, and prevent crop failure.  The offering took the form of a wicker man, or a crucifixion. He was raised in the fields after sewing of the seeds. A standing figure deters vermin such as birds and rodents. The scarecrow promotes a good harvest. The young man selected by the community for sacrifice was often a criminal. The sacrifice became a form of capital punishment and criminal deterrent.  In this way, the form of Jesus on the cross was a familiar symbol. An Easter sacrifice to ensure successful rebirth was a familiar story for the pagan farmers. I wish you all regrowth, forgiveness and fertility. by @battledor
