spent the bank holiday weekend in slovenia!! ljubljana instantly ranking very high on my favourite cities for a chill long weekend, it's such a wonderful city. those who saw my stories had a bit of a nightmare getting there and coming home, missed my connecting flights in both directions and got home almost 24 hours than I intended... lessons learned for future I suppose. taken in Ljubljana, Slovenia by @battlestarvalk

変 - unusual, change, strange
Inspired by the announcement that 金 was the kanji for this year, my japanese teacher asked me to choose a kanji that represented my year. I chose 変 (pronounced "hen" in isolation or "ka" as part of a word), referring to strange behaviours and unusual occurrences, as well as the act of things changing.

At the start of this year, my jpn class provider told me they were once again cancelling classes due to low numbers. Once you reach intermediate language learning, group classes get tough. I chose to instead find a tutor online who helped my writing skills flourish. In 2025 this'll change again as she moves to Denmark in pursuit of her own language journey.

In May I got to join one of the many in the games industry made redundant as the industry changes. It had been a beautiful five years, but ultimately getting pushed to finally stretch out and try something same yet different (same industry, different focus) has been a positive one. The surprise month off between roles also allowed for a quick trip to Japan, true to form.

In September my skate coach had to step back from teaching temporarily, and urged me to find someone for the interim period. Since switching coaches, I've never fallen over so many times, but my technique improvements continue. I went from learning my first half jump to my third full jump within a year, and my "maybe one day" loop jump skill has become something I'm able to do (holding onto the barrier for now, I value the bones in my wrist)

Ultimately a lot of things changed for me. They weren't always expected, or even initially desired, but I think in the end it was full of positives. And for this year, maybe I'll even post some of this huge photo backlog I have stuck on my hard drive.

I would wait until midnight to post but I fly back to the UK in... early morning and I could be asleep before then.

Happy New Year!!

I refuse to make and kind of predictions or resolutions for the coming year because the last time I felt like I had a really great year I went on to have possibly the worst six months of my life so! I had a great 2023! time sure will march on!

Many things I have come to in life came about by accident or by a fortunate coincidence and this was just another example of it. I was very fortunate to be given the opportunity to come to Japan for five months to do some language study and although I had planned on going to Kyoto, a stray reddit comment pointed me in the direction of Kobe instead. I'm sure I would've enjoyed Kyoto but my time in (Nishinomiya and) Kobe was truly incredible and I feel blessed and honoured to have known the city and everyone in it. I don't think anyone would describe my Japanese ability as "good" but in January the thought of even stringing a sentence out loud felt like an insurmountable task.

Ultimately I stayed in Japan for as long as I did to watch a single ice show (THE ICE) which meant the endurance test of surviving into the summer. I'd do it again, and honestly it felt like a no brainer to be a little silly with my savings management and come to Nagano for xmas to watch Japanese figure skating nationals. I'm so glad to have started following the figure skating season properly and to also develop my own skills in skating. I have a private coach and actually fitting skates now and I am so excited to continue learning and developing my own skills on ice.

So much changed for me this year and it was (mostly) positive! I can't really know what the future brings but I hope it's full of more learning, improvements, and fun little trips! taken in Asakusa by @battlestarvalk
