Sometimes the images I end up loving most come from the days I almost decide not to bring a camera at all.

Last summer I spent a few days in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland, surrounded by mountains and crystal-clear rivers. One afternoon we drove down to a mountain stream to swim.

I almost left my camera in the car to avoid worying about sand and water. But the heat was intense and I kept picturing the film sitting in the car, slowly cooking. In the end brought the camera along anyway.

We went straight into the freezing water, then dried off on the warm stones. After a while I noticed little scenes everywhere — light flickering on skin, towels in the branches, friends half hidden behind leaves.

I hadn’t spent much time photographing in nature for a while, and I didn’t realize how much I missed that connection.

When the scans came back, I felt so grateful I hadn’t left the camera behind. Those frames still hold the whole day — cold water, warm rocks, and that quiet happiness of being completely present.

We were out for a walk when we spontaneously decided to head down to a small cove, hoping to catch a few last rays of sun.

We made it just in time. The light was already low, pouring into the little harbor and turning everything gold.

Do you ever wish you could be good at something without having to learn it?

Last spring, I watched surfers in southern France, fascinated by how easy they make it look.

I’ve tried surfing a few times myself and quickly realized I’m not a big fan of falling into the water over and over again.

Ideally, I’d just skip straight to being good. But I guess the learning — and all the awkward attempts — are kind of the point. It probably wouldn’t feel half as satisfying otherwise.

For now, I stick to the camera instead: watching, waiting, searching for the perfect frame — like a surfer chasing the perfect wave.
