Odin, the Allfather of the Norse gods, was often linked to bears because of their power and wild nature. Some stories say Odin could shape-shift into a bear when wandering the human world (Midgard).

However, no matter how hard they tried, the bear was always one step ahead—evading traps, outsmarting hunters, and appearing only at night to challenge their courage. One night, the bear approached a young warrior who had stayed behind, too afraid to join the hunt. Instead of attacking, the bear looked into his eyes, and the warrior suddenly understood: the bear was testing them, pushing them to embrace their strength and bravery.

When the villagers finally confronted the bear as a group, it vanished into thin air, leaving behind Odin’s symbol—two ravens etched into the earth. The people realized it had been Odin all along.

In the era of the Vikings, a hapless traveler had the misfortune of losing their mitten while traversing the treacherous Lendbreen ice. Inexorably, the mitten vanished into the unforgiving snow and ice of the pass, leaving its owner with little hope of recovery. However, fate had other plans, for it was our great fortune to discover the mitten emerging from the receding ice, fully intact, some 1100 years later.

Crafted from several pieces of sewn-together textile, this extraordinary artifact represents the sole surviving Viking Age mitten from Norway. Although it stands to reason that mittens were commonly employed during the harsh winter months of yore, this is the only extant example from this period.

Notably, clothing items are a frequent discovery in mountain passes, with many items likely lost through misadventure, such as being spirited away by a sudden gust of wind. However, one cannot help but speculate about the possibility of more sinister circumstances behind the abandonment of some of these long-forgotten garments.
