This series is one of the closest to my heart. You’ll see three of my nieces stepping into different versions of my younger self — asking the questions I once carried but couldn’t articulate.

The first one? “Will I ever feel beautiful?” A question that haunted me for years.

There’s a reason I’ll post people on my stories and get DMs like “yoh, I thought that was you” — it was intentional. My feed is flooded with girls who either look like me or are as loud as me, so that I feel like I’m normal for being me. They thought they were just content creators, but what they don’t know is they were the PROOF that I could grow up to be beautiful.

I don’t work exclusively work with @niveasouthafrica for skincare just because I’m a picky influencer. I work with them because I owe them my entire career, for the confidence their ads instilled in me as a kid, they were part of my becoming. As a child, they gave me representation, a mirror that said: your skin is beautiful, your presence belongs. That gave me confidence.

My hope is that if my nieces — or any younger version of me — ever find themselves asking the same questions, this series will hand them answers. And not answers wrapped in shame, but answers wrapped in softness, representation, and truth.

This isn’t just content. It’s a love letter to the little girl I was, and the ones coming after me. 💌

I’ve been sitting with this carousel of thoughts all week.

I can’t sleep properly.

I’m being hit with constant waves of sadness and, while I know my therapist would probably say, “Barbara, you’re catastrophising again,” I can’t help but wonder:

Who is next?

Is my mom safe?

Are my nieces okay at school?

What if my sisters go to work and never come back?

Is Aunty Barbara ready to become a mother to those kids?

I almost want to hide everyone I love and lock them up somewhere safe. Because apparently not even somewhere as casual, ordinary and public as a post office is exempt from becoming your final destination.

And as a Christian, I’m terribly conflicted.

I’m caught between intercession and the guilt that maybe I’m not being “strong and courageous” enough. Between trusting God and admitting that right now, I am genuinely afraid.

I’m tired.

I’m speechless.

But more than anything, I’m scared.

I want to fight, but I don’t know who I’m fighting or where to start.

I don’t want my silence to make me complicit. But I’ve also been afraid to speak when I don’t have a solution, an answer or even some light to offer at the end of it.

It’s a strange place to be as a creator when people often come to me for humour. Humour is how I’ve survived some of the hardest seasons of my own life.

But even I don’t know how to laugh through this one right now.

So I don’t have a clever ending.

I don’t have an inspirational quote.

I don’t have a solution neatly packaged into ten slides.

I don’t want being a woman in South Africa to feel this frightening, but it is. Sorry to us.
