Back in July, we had the absolute pleasure of spending a week with Sylvia Massy at Abbey Road Institute Mumbai and Bay Owl Studios.

It was everything I hoped it would be. Unconventional recording ideas and experimentation, stories from decades of making records, taking things apart, putting things back together, and a constant reminder that there really are no rules if it sounds good.

What I enjoyed most was watching our students get completely absorbed in the process. Sylvia brought an infectious curiosity into every room, and somehow made even the strangest ideas feel worth trying.

Having admired her work and approach to recroding for years, the fact that I was able to host her in our studios, work alongside her and see her engage with our students was unbelievably special.

Just a few photos from a week that I'll remember for a long long time.

Two months ago, on 22 July, we kicked off the Song Production Masterclass with Sylvia Massy 🎛️

From recording a live band and experimenting with microphones to building a mix from the ground up, the masterclass was five days of hands-on learning, experimentation, and breaking away from the usual way of doing things.

Alongside the masterclass, our students also had an exclusive three-day session with Sylvia, where they got to learn directly from her, ask questions, and spend time working with her in the studio.

And one of her biggest takeaways for the students went beyond the studio - be patient. Keep working, keep reaching out, keep communicating, and keep the momentum going. Things take time.

Meet Yashwanth Vinay, one of the participants at the Song Production Masterclass with Sylvia Massy. 🎛️

A guitarist, audio engineer, music producer and DJ, Yashwanth joined the masterclass with a personal connection to Sylvia’s work, having previously worked at a studio where she had worked and being a fan of Undertow.

For him, the masterclass was about learning the things you don’t always find online — the techniques, approaches and “tricks up their sleeve” that come from years of working on records. More importantly, it gave him the opportunity to be in the room as a student, ask questions and learn directly from someone of Sylvia’s calibre.

Five days of hands-on experience, experimentation and learning that, as Yashwanth puts it, he wishes could have been 15. 🎚️

Meet Kulraj Adhikari, one of the participants at the Song Production Masterclass with Sylvia Massy. 🎛️

With around two decades of experience as a mixing engineer at Sound and Vision Studios, Kulraj comes from a strong audio engineering background, but the masterclass gave him an opportunity to explore the recording and music production process from a different perspective.

Working with multiple microphones, experimenting with microphone selection and placement, and understanding how different recording approaches can shape a sound were some of the key takeaways from his time in the studio.

At the masterclass, Kulraj joined Sylvia Massy and a select group of music professionals for five days of recording, experimentation, creative exploration, and learning.

A week of stepping outside familiar approaches, trying something new, and discovering more possibilities in the studio. 🎚️
