Just finished A Dark and Drowning Tide and… WHAT A RIDE. 😭🖤

This book really looked at my reading preferences and said, “Let me just put ALL of that in one book.”

Gothic atmosphere? ✔️
An expedition to find the mysterious pool—the source of all magic? ✔️
Mythical creatures from German folklore? ✔️
A murder mystery? ✔️
Politics, loyalty, and fighting for the people they love? ✔️
And, most importantly… YEARING. 👀✔️✔️✔️

THE YEARNING IN THIS BOOK. I was FED. And when they finally admitted it to themselves??? I was giggling, kicking my feet, and probably looking absolutely ridiculous. 😂😭

I loved how the German folklore and mythical creatures were woven into the story. Every encounter made the expedition feel even more dangerous and unpredictable, while the murder mystery kept me invested in figuring out what really happened.

Really, this book feels like it was custom-made for me. Gothic vibes + fantasy adventure + mythical creatures + murder mystery + political intrigue + delicious yearning?

Ma’am, you knew exactly what you were doing.

I loved this. What a freaking ride. 🖤🌊✨ by @bb_poleng

Heir is the first book in a duology set in the same universe as An Ember in the Ashes, taking place 20 years after the original quartet.

I loved the adventure, high stakes, and multiple POVs. I literally GASPed when I realized the POVs weren’t all happening simultaneously. The way Sabaa gradually reveals what’s really happening instead of giving everything away was so effective!

We follow an orphan, an outcast, and a prince.

Aiz grew up in the Kegari slums, driven by vengeance and her love for her people. Imprisoned, her faith never falters, and the book she steals gives her what she believes are divine powers—though the more she learns, the more sinister things become.

Sirsha, banished from her people, hunts a magic user who kills innocents by tearing out their hearts. An unexpected encounter brings her closer to Quill, the reluctant heir to the throne.

Quill, nephew of Empress Helene, wants nothing to do with the crown. But when a new enemy threatens the Empire, he must become what his people need.

I felt SO nostalgic seeing familiar faces from An Ember in the Ashes and discovering what happened to them after the original quartet. And, of course, my girl Helene! 🥹

This book made me feel SO many emotions, especially the betrayal. I genuinely could not process it at first.

What stayed with me most were the themes of betrayal for personal gain, tyranny being replaced by something even more sinister, and people convincing themselves that what they’re doing is justified.

Aiz especially fascinated me. She desperately wants to believe she is the chosen one, even when part of her knows something sinister is happening. Instead of facing the truth and the guilt, she gaslights herself.

Messy, morally complicated, heartbreaking—and I loved it. @sabaatahir by @bb_poleng

🥈 WE BAGGED THE SILVER! 🏓✨

My lucky partner, preggo Quelly! 🤰🏻😂💕

First time joining a dual meet against players from Bataan and our first dual meet outside Olongapo! Definitely a memorable one. 🥹

This was the Women’s Beginners category, and I’m so proud of how we played, fought for every point, and most importantly, displayed good sportsmanship on and off the court. ❤️

Thank you so much for inviting us to play! Until the next one! 🏓🔥 #pickleball #paddleuppals #dualmeer by @bb_poleng

Now I finally understand why people kept telling me to read Blood Over Bright Haven if I loved Babel. I can definitely see the similarities—both explore knowledge, power, exploitation, “civilization,” and the painful truth behind systems people are taught to believe in.

But BOBH is very much its own story. I loved unraveling its magic system, the Kwen, the Otherrealm, the Blight, and all the little crumbs that made me build theory after theory. 😭 The pacing was spot-on, and the revelations kept hitting.

Most of all, I loved Sciona’s journey from blindly believing to finally seeing. There’s something devastating about realizing that the very system that shaped your identity is built on someone else’s suffering.

A 5-star read for me. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Babel may still be my shining star, but BOBH absolutely earned its place beside it. 🌟 @mlwangbooksnews by @bb_poleng

Girl… I have absolutely no idea what these people are doing with the magic. 😭

I’m still only on page 52, so I’m trusting that I’ll eventually get the hang of the whole siphoning and sourcing thing. 😂

But GLAD TO BE BACK! 📚✨ I’m very much excited to enjoy this book because it already has so many similarities to one of my favorite books, Babel by R.F. Kuang.

Dense academia, complicated systems, morally questionable institutions… yeah, I’m listening. 👀

Let’s see where this takes me. 🩸✨ by @bb_poleng
