After a busy Berlin Art Week, we’d like to take a moment to thank everyone who visited BBA Gallery, joined us for the opening, and experienced Poor Traits with us.
The gallery came to life through conversations, encounters and shared moments around the works. It was a wonderful way to begin the exhibition, and we’re grateful to everyone who was part of it.

Spend the weekend with The Game of Nuts.✨

Presented by TOVA Gallery @tova.dreams in the BBA Viewing Room, The Game of Nuts brings together five artists whose works explore different ways of seeing, interpreting and responding to the world around us.

Across the exhibition, individual perspectives come together through distinct materials, visual languages and approaches. Rather than offering one fixed reading, the works invite visitors to move between different ideas, moods and points of view.

If you haven’t had the chance to visit yet, the exhibition is also open this Saturday and Sunday. Come by, take your time with the works and experience The Game of Nuts in person.

An exhibition bringing together nine artists and different approaches to portraiture.

Across painting, photography, video, installation, and digital media, the exhibition brings together different approaches to portraiture, identity, and the way we perceive others. The works explore memory, vulnerability, and personal experience, as well as technology, social structures, public image, and the systems through which faces and identities are interpreted.

Together, the artists move beyond the portrait as a simple representation of appearance. Their works echo the ideas at the heart of Poor Traits, where identity is understood as layered, shifting, and shaped by both personal experience and the world around us.

Introducing Sheung Yiu @sheungyiuphoto featured at the Poor Traits exhibition.

Sheung Yiu is an image centered artist and researcher whose practice explores how images are interpreted through culture, technology, and systems of belief. Working across photography, video, installations, and photo objects, he is interested in how meaning is placed onto the human face rather than simply captured by it.

In The New Shaman Chased the Old One Out of Town and Faceless, Yiu looks at different systems that have tried to read character through appearance. One draws on Chinese physiognomy, while Faceless refers to Lavater’s use of silhouettes to judge personality. Rather than revealing who a person really is, these methods show how much meaning we place onto appearance. This tension between what is visible and what we assume lies beneath it closely reflects the concerns explored in Poor Traits.

Introducing Sylvie Wozniak @sylviewoz featured at the Poor Traits exhibition.

Sylvie Wozniak is a Geneva based visual artist with a background in contemporary dance, fine art, and Chinese calligraphy and painting. In 365, Sylvie Wozniak created one portrait every morning for an entire year, always using the same format and technique. Through this repeated act of observation, the face becomes more than a record of appearance. It becomes a place where identity, emotion, and traces of other people’s stories begin to collect.

For Wozniak, the face may be the most visible part of the body, yet it never reveals a person completely. Each portrait holds only part of an identity, while something always remains between the lines. Across 365 faces, identity appears layered, changing, and shaped through repeated encounters with others, a perspective that sits naturally within the wider ideas of Poor Traits.

Introducing Vishal Shah @vishalshah.io featured at the Poor Traits exhibition.

Vishal Shah is a Berlin based multidisciplinary and conceptual artist whose work is driven by ideas, storytelling, and personal mythologies. His practice often looks at the tension between identity and self, exploring how two can be shaped, presented, and transformed.

In Legends, Shah examines how identities can give way to a carefully constructed public persona. In Vellum, filmed faces are transformed into moving, abstract landscapes, shifting attention from physical appearance to the psychological layers beneath it. Together, the works move beyond portraiture as simple likeness and draw attention to the unstable relationship between appearance, identity, and the self, a line that runs through Poor Traits.

Introducing Theresa Reiwer @theresa_rwr featured at the Poor Traits exhibition.

Theresa Reiwer is a post-digital artist working across video, XR, and spatial installations, combining digital technologies with analogue methods. Theresa Reiwer works with digital faces to explore how we recognise something as human. Her figures may look familiar and lifelike, but small imperfections remain visible. These details make the face feel present, while still reminding us that it is artificially created.

As the work develops, the face slowly merges with forms that resemble both roots and digital networks. The figure becomes harder to define as simply human, artificial, or natural. This uncertainty echoes the wider thinking behind Poor Traits, where identity is understood as something shaped by what surrounds us rather than something completely fixed.

Introducing Anne Moses @annemosesartist featured at the Poor Traits exhibition.

Anne Moses looks closely at the human face and body, focusing on skin, texture, expression, and subtle shifts in emotion. Her paintings bring these details into focus, turning small and fleeting moments into something more intimate and reflective.

In Sleeping Mimi and Closer, the face is not treated simply as a portrait of one person. Instead, Moses captures moments of rest, reflection, and quiet emotion that feel widely recognisable. Within Poor Traits, these fragments point towards human qualities that are personal, yet also shared across different lives and experiences.
