Happy birthday to my beautiful wife.

Life with you is never boring from raising kids, pigs and dog-pigs to planning adventures, working opposite shifts and everything in between. I’m so thankful I get to do all of it with you.

You’re an amazing wife, an incredible mom, and the heart of our family. I may not say it enough, but I appreciate you more than you know.

Happy birthday Jessica Battles. I love you! by @bbattles

Plenty of core memories unlocked this week at the Ohio State Fair. Alayna won a fish (of course) and showed her Duroc Gilt Scarlett for the last time. Finn showed Felicia in the junior show and ended up with a 5th place in class. He did a little dance in the placement pens 😆. Finn even took a little ride on Felicia while we were loading her to head home. I’ve never seen athleticism from him like that before but he rode her backwards for probably 80 feet before she slowed down.

We wish the red girls had more runway but they taught us a lot and now they get to go on and farrow litters of future state fair and jackpot pigs. by @bbattles

Having a blast with this set of pigs this spring. This is “Roosevelt” (Finn’s a big American history guy) bred by Real McCoy Genetics. Picked this guy up on a whim and we’re sure glad we did. by @bbattles

Jess was able to snap a few more videos during our nightly walking routine. This is 5-2 “Felicia” bred by Hartley Family Showpigs. She wasn’t looking her best tonight but we’re also excited to see what she can do for us this summer. by @bbattles

If you would’ve told me my first turkey hunt would play out exactly how I imagined it, I’d have called you a liar.

Late last week, Alayna and I slipped in and set a blind near a spot where I’d been roosting a bird. The plan was simple, just sit it out and learn where they were flying down. As we were wrapping up, one hammered way off across the river. We backed out, came back at roost that evening, nothing. No sight, no sound.

Fast forward a few days. I eased in about 30 minutes before shooting light and there he was, roosted just across the river, inside 100 yards. For over an hour, he put on a show, gobbling hard, sometimes every 10 seconds.

I waited him out until he hit the ground. Grabbed the box call and gave him a little heat, he hammered right back. Ten minutes later, I hit him again, same response, but this time another gobbler lit up behind me, much closer.

That bird looped around and turned out to be a Jake, just out of range. He faded back into the timber, so I went back to the box call.

The original bird answered, 80 to 100 yards out, and I could tell he was committed. Next thing I know, he steps out of the grass and comes in on a string along the edge. Gobbling the whole way in the wide open.

40 yards.

Game over.

11” beard. 1 1/4” spurs.

Unreal hunt. Video of the final approach and shot coming soon… after I add a few bleeps 😂🦃 by @bbattles
