The Barbary lion originally lived across the breadth of North Africa between the Sahara desert and the Mediterranean sea. By the early 20th century it was limited to parts of Morocco and Algeria. Hunting, loss of prey species and human incursion and loss of habitat all contributed to the lion becoming limited to isolated pockets. Even after Marcelin Flandrin’s photo there were further sightings until the 1950s. It probably finally became extinct in the wild in the late 1950s or early 1960s. Barbary lions were distinct from the lions of the East and South African plains: larger, with long dark manes stretching back along their bodies and legs, with a large tail tuft and regal narrow nose and skull. This photo is of a captive Barbary lion in Algeria – showing some of their features. My latest article for the BBC tells the story of the Barbary lion. The article has just been released and is now available by just searching the BBC Wildlife Magazine channel in your Apple News app. Watch this space for more information about the remarkable Barbary lion. #lion #barbarylion #atlaslions #extinction by @bbcwildlifemagazine

🐘 Our July issue features an incredible set of images by Suzi Eszterhas, who spent a year in Botswana’s Mashatu Game Reserve, also known as the land of the giants, to document the lives of elephant families

Herds like this are constantly on the move in search of fresh grazing and water. The adult females are fiercely protective of their calves, who have quickly learn to keep pace with the herd at only two days old

My cover story and 8-page feature for @bbcwildlifemagazine 💙

Maybe I’m a bit old school at heart, but there’s something really special about having your work in print…it allows people to slow down and engage more deeply with a story, away from the constant distractions and fast pace of stories on a screen.

I wrote this feature for the Spring 2026 issue, documenting the incredible work of @pipa_sobral, founder of @mantacatalogazores and an affiliate project of the @mantatrust. The article explores ongoing research and conservation efforts focused on devil rays in the Azores.

A huge thank you to the team at @bbcwildlifemagazine for giving this story a platform, to the contributing photographers whose work helped bring the feature together, and to the community of Santa Maria for their generosity and hospitality throughout the production.
