With LA highway landscapes spanning 1999 to the present, “Are We There Yet?” Jane Dickson’s new show at Karma LA, is a real eyeball-riveter. Several of the largest paintings, at nearly ten feet wide, convey twilight moments when the paved expanses resonate an ethereal sublimity, mitigated only by taillights of barely visible cars, silhouetted transmission towers, palms, and the occasional billboard. She’s captured an eerie, shimmering lostness. In the most abstract painting I’ve seen in Jane’s oeuvre, “Out of Here Red Taillights, Snow” (oil on Astroturf, 2002-2013), we’re transported to chillier climes. It’s as if she’s conjured a 1920s Monet lilly pond that dissolves in full transcendence into particles of electrified light. #janeinpeepland #karmakarma9 by @bblinde

I met Barry Blinderman as a teenager in Central Illinois. I was 17 and had just graduated from High School. I won a scholarship that year to attend “art camp” at Illinois State University. I was already enrolled at UIUC in Urbana- Champaign and almost didn’t go to Bloomington because, two weeks sleeping away from my boyfriend, Crash sounded like an eternity. I am so glad I followed through because at camp I met a life long mentor and friend. Barry had recently moved to Bloomington Illinois from New York after closing Semaphore Gallery, an important contemporary art space that showed amazing artists like Keith Haring and Walter Robinson. He gave the teenagers a gallery tour and I spent a lot of time asking questions and talking about the artwork. He was the first contemporary art curator I ever met. To his credit he encouraged me to keep going even though no one thought art school was a good idea for me. My parents thought I was wasting my intelligence, what GATE kid from an immigrant family could be selfish enough to study art? I was nervous but excited about going to study art and Barry saw something in me and told me I was great. Neither of us have ever lost touch for more than a few years. My entire adult life from undergraduate school, to graduate school, to CAA, then to art exhibitions in Los Angeles, by some twist of fate we run into each other. He has showed up for me so many times and I am excited to show up to hear him play tonight at 7 at the Hotel Cafe. In addition to being a curator he is a musician and extremely knowledgeable about music. Check out his vintage Public Image Limited t-shirt. Excited to cheer for my incredibly witty and creative friend. Excited for the show Barry, see you at 7:00 pm! Details on the last slide. It is worth mentioning Barry’s beautiful art collection, check out the beautiful Walter Robinson and Thomas Woodruff paintings in his home. @bblinde @thehotelcafe @misterthomaswoodruff @walterrobinsonstudio by @bblinde

Tseng Kwong Chi
excerpts from a film by Christine Lombard (1984) East Meets West. See more photography in Make Me Famous!

“I am an inquisitive traveller. A witness of my time and an ambiguous ambassador.” -TSENG KWONG CHI

A pioneering performative photographer Tseng Kwong Chi was Hong Kong-born/Vancouver raised, moved to NYC in 1978.

Tseng Kwong Chi’s photography practice was far ahead of its time. His work blended performance art, satire, and street photography and he was a key documentarian of the gritty East Village art scene.

While creating this iconic self-portrait series, he met Keith Haring and began the diligent process of photographing the entirety of Haring’s extensive body of work.

✨Special thanks to Muna Tseng @tsengkwongchi for graciously letting us include some of his photographs in Make Me Famous!

Sunset Eclectico Presents: Barry Blinderman

Barry Blinderman has spent more than five decades shaping the arts as a musician, gallery director, museum curator, essayist, educator, and recording artist.

Inspired to pick up the guitar at age 12 after seeing The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show, he released his first single, “Strange Haze,” in 1969, earning local radio success in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley.

After an accomplished career in New York’s visual arts world, Blinderman returned to songwriting with renewed focus following his move to Los Angeles in 2019. His music blends folk, rock, and poetic storytelling with sharp reflections on contemporary culture, politics, and the human experience. With performances at respected venues across the United States, Barry continues to captivate audiences through songs that are both thought-provoking and deeply personal.

Thank you all for your caring responses to my post last week on Mark Sumner Forth’s passing. It is soothing to hear such heartfelt comments by those who either knew Mark, were fans of his work, went to school with him, or were just now learning about him and his paintings. Many remarked on his kindness, his sense of humor, the quiet magic of his paintings. For local and regional friends, a celebration of life will be held in Bloomington in July, with details forthcoming. by @bblinde

I am profoundly sad to post that my dear friend of three decades, artist Mark Sumner Forth, died early this morning of heart failure. I will sorely miss our weekly hour-long conversations (yes, some of us still make calls), trading links to our favorite tunes, passionately discussing art, and, of course, following the progress of his latest painting.
I'm sharing below the text for the obituary I just wrote and some photos of him and his work. May Mark's memory be for a blessing:
Mark Sumner Forth, age 70, a renowned artist and lifelong resident of Bloomington, Illinois, died on May 21, 2026, surrounded by loved ones. Known for his kindness, quick wit, and unwavering commitment to social justice, Mark was a lifelong learner with wide- ranging knowledge of history, contemporary music, antiques, and politics; his humorous anecdotes often left his dinner company spellbound.
Mark painted domestic scenes whose familiar-yet-surreal imagery arose from dreams: a figure lying in bed next to a grandfather clock; bluebirds perched on a ladder pierced by arrows; a horse corralled within a wooden bed frame; a ballerina leaning against a birdbath in a garden at twilight. Throughout his career he sought to guide viewers into a realm of stillness and sculptural light reminiscent of Magic Realism.
He received a bachelor's degree from Illinois State University in 1987. His paintings are held in public and private collections throughout the Midwest, including the Illinois State Museum (Springfield); the Rockford Art Museum, the Central Illinois Regional Airport (Bloomington-Normal), and an eleven painting permanent installation in Fell Hall at Illinois State University.
Mark was predeceased by his parents, Ruth and Rolly Forth of Bloomington, and his brother, Chris Forth of Portland, Oregon. He is survived by his sister, Sarah Forth Rawson, of Vancouver, Washington. Memorial arrangements are pending. Contributions may be made in his memory to the Democratic National Party.
