POSTS STORIES REELS

This year, the Boothbay Register team made an appearance in front of the camera, instead of behind it, at the Windjammer Day Parade! If you saw us, you may have heard we're celebrating 150 years of reporting on community news, big and small, for all 52 weeks of the year.

Thanks to some wonderful volunteers on our digitization project team, all that history will soon be available.

Help us out by supporting the “Your History, Your Story” campaign. Scan the QR code, visit our website, or call us at (207) 633-4620.

A lot has changed in Boothbay Harbor over the last 125 years, but for locals and visitors alike, the footbridge has remained constant. About 200 people gathered Oct. 24 to celebrate this iconic local landmark and mark a spot in the bridge's history. A drone fly-over captured a photo of the smiling, waving crowd. The photo is going into a time capsule to be opened on the sesquicentennial.

"(The footbridge is) part of what makes our town special, and it's certainly something worth preserving for future generations. And speaking of preserving ... a footbridge sitting over salt water for 125 years doesn't take care of itself," said Town Manager Julia Latter, taking time to highlight the public works employees, contractors, craftsmen and others who've kept the bridge functional.

Whether it was homemade sour pickles, painted coastal sceneries, or wooden brain teasers, the 90 vendors at @boothbayrailwayvillage annual Fall Foliage Festival had something for everyone. That includes the little ones, who got to paint pumpkins in the "Foliage Fun Zone" or learn about managing anxiety with sensory bins.

The two-day event (Oct. 10 -11) saw record turnout on Saturday, with just under 2,000 attendees from across the country, said Marketing and Event Coordinator Lori Reynolds. While not reaching the same highs, business on Sunday remained steady.

Mine Oyster Raw Bar & Gathering Place hosted the 23rd Pemaquid Oyster Festival in Boothbay Harbor, Sept. 26-27, featuring freshly shucked oysters of the Damariscotta River region. Event-goers sampled oysters from The Pemaquid Oyster Company, Mook Sea Farm, Norumbega Oyster Inc., Dodge Cove Marine Farm, Glidden Point Oyster Farms, Blackstone Point Oysters, Pleasant Cove Oyster Farm, Heron Island Oyster Company, Great Salt Bay Oyster Co. and Carlisle Oyster Farm.

The festival is an annual fundraiser for the Edward A. Myers Marine Conservation Fund, which has awarded over $250,000 through grants and scholarships to Lincoln County non-profit groups that work in marine conservation and education. A tribute table to Myers, featuring his work boots, served as an homage to the South Bristol resident, shellfish farmer and mentor to many of the river's early oyster growers.

$A penalty stroke lifted into the top left corner of the goal with just under two minutes to play gave Lisbon the lead and the visiting Lisbon Greyhounds held on to defeat the Boothbay Region Seahawks, 2-1, on Perkins Field Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 23. The Class C South contest featured the undefeated Greyhounds (now 5-0) against the division-leading Seahawks (now 5-2). The loss dropped Boothbay to second place as Winthrop jumped to first place as of Thursday morning. Lisbon is in fourth place. The eventual winning stroke – a one-on-one play between an offensive player against the goalie seven-feet in front of the goal –was delivered by Julia Quigliaroli with 1:53 to play after an infraction in front of the goal by the Seahawks. A wall of 2,977 flags decorated Sherman's Field in the early morning of Sept. 11; each one representing a life lost during the terrorist attack 25 years prior. "So many names, there is barely room on the walls of the heart," wrote then-U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins of the tragedy.

Collins' words were some invoked by speakers as students, faculty, first responders and community members gathered in remembrance. With more than 100 million Americans born after 9/11, including the region's current students, the memorial emphasized pulling the event out of the history books.

"Twenty-five years ago, our nation made a shared promise we will never forget. We gather here as a school and a town to fulfill that promise, we pass the torch of remembrance to a new generation, so that the historic significance of 9/11, the unimaginable losses endured, the enduring strength of our spirit, are never lost to time," said Tricia Campbell, Boothbay Region High School (BRHS) principal.

Clouds hovered over Southport Island and dozens upon dozens of people hovered in and around Southport Fire Department for the annual SFD Fireman's Auction Saturday morning, Aug. 22.

Featuring a flea market and miscellaneous items for sale before the bidding, firefighters said interested buyers started arriving in droves at 6 a.m. If people weren't at the fire station, the school staff, parents and other volunteers across the street were kept busy preparing and selling breakfast sandwiches, baked goods, fruit cups and more.

Parking was at a premium by 8 a.m. and firefighters, junior firefighters and other young volunteers were busy carrying items for buyers, moving furniture, taking cash, recording and handing out numbered bid cards, making sure the road was safe, and answering questions about items.

The residents and staff of St. Andrews Village were ready to greet two special guests Friday morning, Aug. 14, outside the Village Inn.

The special guests had nothing to say, but the greeters were sure smitten with them.

Enter Jimmy and Marley, horses owned by Ella Watts and her parents, Robbie and Sara Watts. The horses are boarded at Burke’s Island Farm (@burkes.island.farm) in Boothbay and they spent about an hour at the Village. Greeters touched, fed, brushed, photographed and some hugged the horses.

Looking like a page had been ripped from National Geographic, a menagerie of exotic animals touched down at Boothbay Harbor Town Hall Aug. 7 for a presentation from "Mr. Drew and His Animals Too"
(@mr._drew_and_his_animals_too). Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library hosted the event.

The titular Mr. Drew, Drew Desjardins, has worked with exotics for 35 years and started his organization about 15 years ago. His Poland-based team runs a combination of a hands-on natural science and history museum, and an exotic rescue/reptile zoo. Their tagline reads, they take what the Humane Society won’t. This includes reptiles, amphibians, birds and fish, totaling over 400 animals in-facility.

In a pre-event interview, Desjardins said the goal is education, not becoming a pet store. In fact, many animals they receive are sick from mistreatment. And most are illegal to own in Maine. A strong believer that Maine ecosystems belong to Maine animals, Desjardins often works with the Warden Service as a consultant and helps make laws about exotics
