Introducing A Soft Guide to Chill. A journey through the mystic haze of 90s chill out rooms, recontextualising their histories beyond the romanticisation of nostalgia, and instead as a practice. A practice where both rest and movement can be seen as resistance, where listening and disappearing can be held equally. Because soft does not only mean gentle, calm, and angelic. Soft means the urge to radically connect, to rewrite history. How we cultivate that is by offering a space where nothing is expected of you. The desire to show up, to rest, to move, to dream.

Our new website is an evolving archive of music, research and art, dedicated to the forgotten histories of chill out and its surrounding psychedelic communities. Enter this enigmatic world through the link in our bio, we are only just beginning.

BBTCOR Presents: A Soft Guide to Chill | 9 & 24 OCT  In collaboration with @w139amsterdam we present to you A Soft Guide to Chill, a 2-part residency that will guide you through the many layers of chill out. For those who want to listen, but not be told to listen. For those who want to slow down whilst keeping moving. For those who want to dream, but not to escape. Across both evenings, we invite artists to present their own interpretation of chill out, in symbiosis with our new scenography installation designed by Claartje Barkhof and Sarah Saleh.

A Soft Guide to Chill is a multidisciplinary project exploring the ways in which 90s chill out histories intersect with contemporary forms of listening. Through creating neural networks between past, present, and future ideas of the chill out room, we unfurl what has already been and gone, and what it could become.

The term ‘chill out’ derives from the gutted-out corners of clubs in 90s Europe, cloaked in a tapestry of textiles, neon paint, and oddball ambient frequencies. Such culture paved the way for a style of music known as ‘chill out’ to flourish, which naturally collided with the new age spirituality movement. Borrowing ritualistic symbols decontextualized from spiritual practices in the west, chill out’s digression as a sound became a greyzone between appreciation and appropriation. Instead of giving more weight to this vague term ‘Eastern philosophy’ that weaves its way into chill out culture, we dive into the practice of Vinthya Perinpanathan, who has been investigating ancient ritual music from Sri Lanka, and the cross-cultural exchange that adds knowledge, depth, and understanding, rather than subtracting voices from the source.

Firmly rooted in Belgium’s electronic scene, @dj_athome has been tracing the sonic threads of chill out music for the past three decades, growing up on the ethereal cereal of Ozric Tentacles and other prolific live bands who mainly spawned in the UK’s new age and stone-hengian musical movement of the 80s, and the psychonautic philosophy of Terrence McKenna which indoctrinated the psychedelia of space rock, dub and ambient with hippie hedonism. Whether rooted in mystical autonomous zones, or firmly within the walls of a large concert venue, the following conversation is a snapshot archive of the history of chill out, tracing the cross-pollination of psychedelic rock with dub - a melting pot of sounds from multiple corners of our stratosphere.

Our opening event of A Soft Guide to Chill welcomes WyXXe - @wissejanbarqhof - a live artist who incorporates synthetic and organic frequencies, oscillating through modular hardware. Shying away from club-focused rhythm, yet still with a beat-driven focus, he fuses algorithmic patterns with emotive melodies inspired by 60s minimal composers and field recordings from everyday life. WyXXe will present to us his live project “Until the Water Runs Clear”, written and produced during his residency in the Pyrenees, bridging the seasonal shift from winter to spring, nature’s elements, and the mathematical behaviour of sound.

Para-siting: BBTCOR 𓆓

We welcome our next Para-siting with BBTCOR (Bring Back The Chill Out Room)!

During ‘A Soft Guide To Chill’ is a series of events that incorporate archival research and knowledge exchange arounf the history of 90's chill out rooms. Throughout three wekks, the programme will highlight will highlight the launch of BBTCOR’s website, artist scenography and installation, and conclue with an event during ADE 2026 with music curated by Sarah Saleh and Claartje Barkhof, and editorial research by El Bickers.

BBTCOR is an artistic and curatorial platform that revives and reimagines 1990s chill-out room culture. Connecting past, present, and future ideas of the chill-out room, the project explores spaces of rest, reflection, intimacy, and listening alongside club culture. Through events, radio broadcasts, scenography, research, and public programmes, BBTCOR investigates chill-out rooms as spaces for recovery, connection, experimentation, and alternative ways of experiencing music.

Introducing the artists who will be carving out their own sonic world during A Soft Guide to Chill at W139. @elinatapio crafts cerebral sets steeped in dark atmospheres and psychedelic rhythms, with mysticism and obscurity woven through every club or listening session. Acknowledging her approach to sound as a disembodied experience, she touches upon the fluidity of performance, the contemplation of the unknown, and the sensual possibilities of chill out.

Listening spaces have witnessed a revival across Europe, often in response to a growing demand to slow down. Such spaces lean into ideas of wellness and spirituality, to meditate, soothe the nervous system, or simply escape overstimulation. This package of rest posits a question: by engaging with prescribed listening, are we connecting with the environment around us, or only with ourselves?

In our current clubbing ecosystem, the need to stay connected feels stronger than ever, yet we’re met with an infrastructure demanding we remain online, dancefloors are emptying out, and getting lost in the sauce no longer fits with optimising our minds and bodies. But something is bubbling in the undergrowth of Amsterdam’s club and art community, bridging deep listening with movement and connection. Less switching off, more tuning in.

This is the chill out room: born from the horizontal corners of 90s club culture, offering respite while staying in tune with the politics of movement. In conversation with @sarah.ssssssss and @claarieb of Amsterdam’s BBTCOR, @lnr_dj unveils new forms of the chill out room and what the future could hold for these spaces.
