Woohoo... Got some great news. 3 of us co-wrote a paper on the introduced and highly invasive Common Brown Click Beetle (Athous haemorrhoidalis). Our paper has been accepted in the Bio One Library. We are officially Published 😃

About 18 months ago, my friend Justin and I came across this Species that could not be Identify from local data. We uploaded our finding to Inaturalist, only to find out that it was likely from Europe, and that captured the attention of a PhD with the right information. Scott asked that I get him some specimen to be confirm under the microscope.

Scott's findings prompted him to ask for my field notes which were sent to our local Agriculture Canada branch. They went to work on the species right away. Within a week, I had a rep from Agriculture Canada in my local park. We harvested more samples. the Goal was to create a synthetic pheromone to use in Bait traps. As far as I know, they were successful in the process.

I am glad I was able to contribute to the world of science.

I commented on someone else's post, and one of my friends asked a question, I thought I should address.

I gave up driving almost 6 years ago... or when the Gas prices were about to hit $2.00 per litre ($7.57 per US Gallons).

I still drive from time to time when friends who have cars but don't like driving, call on my services lol.

But yeah... 6 years on a E-Cargo bike. 19,000 kms. When I was still driving my Mini pick-up I was averaging 3000kms per year. I'm covering more ground by bike.

We have an extensive network of cycling paths in Vancouver, and all of my clients are within a block of one.

I seldom use main roads, I obey the traffic signs including Stops, and I can still cover the 14 kms from where I live to my storage unit in 25 minutes. My best time driving was 35m.

Now let's talk financial... the cost of the bike, trailer, add ons (not including tool boxes). and maintenance for 5 years, still come out under $5000.00

I estimate my cumulative savings to be near $100,000.

What I am getting at is that I have a hard time finding the draw backs 😊 by @bc_gypsy

one of the smaller Western Sedge Sitter (Platycheirus trichopus) I have encountered. It is Native to the North American West Coast. From Northern California to southern Alaska.

it was given a "Vulnerable" Status in Canada (Source: NatureServe)... but not in the backyard where i live. We have dozens 🙂

the Species was observed 163 times in BC and 1195 in North America... 63 of those are mine. lol

While on my Instagram hiatus, I rediscovered my love of Macro photography.

I also thought it would be worthwhile to share my data on a science based website. I have been using Inaturalist since 2019.

thanks to that website, I can tell you that this is a female White-bowed Smoothwing (Scaeva affinis) from the Hoverfly family.
