Over four days we’ll take the knowledge built from your AIARE L1 and Intro to Touring and develop skills for navigation, snowpack and terrain evaluation, and steep touring techniques. The Fortune Peak Huts provide a unique venue where we can learn in a small-group setting; practicing skills all day, and enjoying group reflection, shared meals, and an 8 person wood-fired sauna as we wind down in the evenings. He’s currently dreaming of skiing in Patagonia and Gulmarg while exploring the North end of Honshu.

It’s been a marathon of work lately, guiding with @bcaguide in the North Cascades!

One trip that was very memorable last week was guiding the Sulfide on Shuksan with my new friend Bruce! Bruce is an absolute crusher, & such an amazing human being. He’s 73-years old & had climbed Kulshan a few years back, & reached out to us to climb Shuksan this year. Without having nearly any rock climbing experience, & living in Florida, he totally crushed this climb! He moved well on the rock, in mountaineering boots nonetheless, & had a great attitude towards learning & growing his skill set. One piece that warmed my heart: he’s an ex-fighter pilot in the Navy, & has clearly lived a long & fruitful life, yet he told me this trip was the biggest highlight of his life so far…much praise! ❤️ thanks Bruce; was awesome climbing with you! 👌

I’m in the midst of a pretty solid work block, guiding Kulshan 3xs this week! After that though, my summer season is coming to a close, & it’ll be nice to slow down, reflect & adopt a slower pace. This summer so far has been good in general, but a few trips have given me pause that I need time to reflect on, & it’ll be nice to have the time to actually reflect. Friends, I’d love to catch up with you too!

Today we’re highlighting the Wapta traverse, which threads its way through big terrain in the Canadian Rockies. This trip is a bucket list trip for many and for good reason.

The Wapta is a great first Ski-Mountaineering trip and serves as a great classroom to learn the skills to navigate and ride the complex glaciated terrain on volcanoes, or experience other multi day tours like Forbidden and Spearhead.

A plethora of summit and ski descent options exist along the tour, but avalanche conditions and physical stamina will determine which runs are best for us on any given day.

This week we’re highlighting the indefatigable @cheri.higman. During the early part of the season she’ll be teaching avalanche courses in Washington before she shifts her attention to working trips in Canada. Her dream ski trip is to Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic or Svalbard Island in Norway.

Cheri is an @aiare_official Course Leader, @amga1979 Apprentice Ski Guide, and the first woman chairperson in Seattle Mountain Rescue’s 75 year history. by @bcaguide
