it’s the best time of the year…. join us for my series LOVE IN SPITE OF IT ALL at Sideshow Cinematheque. (AKA: “with the whole world crumbling, we pick this time to fall in love.”)

we’ll go to Iran and France and Japan and Brazil and Morocco falling in and out and in love again, celebrating love lost and love found no matter the obstacle (be it volcano, world war, fascist, or………).

as always, I’ll read a little something beforehand to set the mood:
— doors at 7:45, show at 8:30;
— please buy a book (or 2 or 3 or more) for admission;
— DM to let us know you’re coming;
— drinks and usually a small snack avail for purchase.

and as always, an evening on our back patio remains the best summer night out in LA. #romance

no one should die while crossing the street. our city has failed Nadir Gavarrete—a nine-year-old boy—and countless others, because our streets and society are designed to prioritize cars while any help is stuck in bureaucracy. (plans for new safety measures here were proposed in 2011; the project was funded last year, but is still under review 14!!! years later.)

I am so grateful and proud to be part of @crosswalksla. we spent a poignant saturday morning painting four crosswalks. I met Nadir’s father, Pedro, while monitoring traffic and we grieved together. a neighbor brought all of us cold orange juice. passerby made the sign of the cross as they saw the beautiful flowers and tribute. our painting was celebrated and appreciated by the community because any improvements are so desperately needed.

I hope this story affects you. I hope you are sad that a child has senselessly died. I hope you are angry this family was torn apart for no reason. I hope you are scared, knowing how vulnerable we all are to traffic violence. I am! I hope you let this encourage you to act. anyone can do something (for any issue: they are all connected). no action is too small. the city, the driver, our society all have blood on their hands: how many people, old young or in between, must die before our world changes? I’m going to keep talking about it as long as they’ll have me. (and finding the nice moments, like @jcwbw‘s video on the last slide, along the way 🫶) by @bcockrell

come join us this summer for SIDESHOW BELIEVES IN LOVE, my showcase of yearning, passion, and the reminder that the glory of love—for a moment, a lifetime, or several lifetimes; with a partner, family, community, etc—is always worth the risk. love in many colors.

we’ll be in the back patio most Thursday nights—starting this Thursday! movie begins about 8:30 but come earlier to hang, buy some books, and hear my curatorial remarks and maybe a poem about the movie and the merits of its particular love. some drinks and snacks available for purchase; $5 donation please. seating is limited so let us know if you’ll be joining us!

it’s the best way to spend a summer night in LA. everyone is welcome 🫶
